My SIL recently bought an older Winchester 101 20ga. Very nice bird gun fixed choked IC/Mod with 26" bbls. I've always shot SxSs for grouse, but this shotgun has impressed me much.

Question .... Do all these 101s come with a non-automatic safety or is there a disconnect function in there somewhere?

Thanks

I've owned a couple of 101s and been around many more. Not one had an auto safety. I'm of mixed views on the value of an auto safety. Hate them on a single trigger o/u but don't mind them on a DT sxs.

I think an auto safety function is like double triggers. Once you get used to either system, you GTG. I prefer DTs over the singles and with extractors.

I've had half a dozen SxS or O/U's with auto-safeties, and have had all them converted to non-auto just as soon as I could get get them done.
Most recently, a Beretta SxS and a Union Armera (Grulla) were so modified. No problem with double triggers, just really dislike auto-safeties !

I don't recall a 101 with an auto safety, and my Ithaca SKB's ( 200, 500 & 600 ) didn't have them either.

The original 101's were indeed good guns. Had a 12 & 20 gauge Skeet (chambered for 3" no less !) a 101 Diamond Trap and a 12 Gauge 2-Barrel "Live Bird" which
was apparently a bit rare as both barrels had interchangeable chokes (supposedly only 50 made that way). And while essentially 101's, the revamped
Classic Doubles versions in 12 and 20 Skeet and a 4 Barrel Skeet set. They all shot very well for me and were absolutely reliable. The 101 and Classic 20's both accounted
for their fair share of grouse & woodcock, as well as a good number of pheasant and a few chukar.

Many found the original 101's to be a little sharp in the "felt recoil" department and had the forcing cones lengthened and a good quality pad installed if there wasn't
one already present.

I shoot a Winchester 101 Pigeon grade for Sporting Clays and Skeet. Confirming what other said - NO automatic safety, a manual safety is better for all clay shooting.
Cheers,
Roger
