Winchester 1300 pumps ?

I was familiar with the older 1200 pump but I no little about the 1300's

1) Are they on par with Browning BPS
Wingmasters
Express
or are they a more entry level gun like mossbergs

2) Any inherent issues with the model ?

What did they sell for new ?

I have the 1300xtr I bought it in about 1989 or so for $400. I have a bps and a 870express. I like the winchester and bps more than the express...but then maybe not a fair comparison. I have never handled an actual 870 wingmaster which I suspect from it's reputation may put it in the lead. The only thing I don't like about the 1300 is the receiver is painted or anodized black or something as opposed to being blued like the barrel.

Never fired a mossy, but have handled some and I would put the winchester ahead of the mossberg (although I'm sure some will disagree).
 
I love my Winchester Speed Pump (same thing as a 1300) but the finish on it is crap.

I've killed two bears and a bunch of crows and ducks with it.

If I was buying a new pump gun I'd probably buy the same gun but with a better finish. I can cycle this gun very quickly, and I've never had a problem with it. I'm a fan.
 
I have a 1300 that I bought about 10 or 11 years ago and I really like it with the smooth bore barrel for a duck or goose gun. It always cycles and it shoots very well. What I don't like is that the scope mounts on the receiver when using the rifled barrel. This is a real pain compared to the cantilevered mounts on the Mossberg that attach to the barrel.
 
I had a Winchester 1200, 1300 and I still have a BPS and Wingmaster, oh yeh and an Express. As mentioned, the 1300 is not quite in the same catagory as the BPS and Wingmaster. More in the Express class or maybe a bit above it.
 
I have two 1300s in 20 ga and would not give them up. Great handling and fast follow up shots. I prefer them to the bps and express but my wingmaster is a very nice handling gun as well.
 
I have a 1300 8 shot and i love it. I have put countless rounds through it and can't see myself stopping anytime soon. Even though it only has a 18 in barrel i still took it goose hunting and it worked great. You just have to bring them in a little closer. It has never jammed and field stripping is amazingly easy. And putting it back together is just as fast. I can easily fire all 8 rounds in under 4 seconds.

The best part is the rotary bolt. Like on a semi auto rifle. Which you won't find on other pump guns.

Winchester discontinued them a few years back but the are back under a different model. I think it is the Super X Pump. I have shot mossbergs, and the express and i prefer the 1300.
 
I also have the 1300 XTR. Looks nice, works well and is also very lightweight. Not comparable to the Wingmaster or BPS though.

I like my super x pump as well:)
 
I agree with Turkey Slayer. Not quite a BPS but a step up from the express and Mossberg. Available in different versions too. You can get a pretty plain one with plain stock and ribbed forend, or go up to something like a checkered stock and forend with jeweled bolt, etc. There's also NWTF and Ducks Unlimited models out there. It's essentially the same gun as the 1200, just a few differences. I love the 1200/1300 series guns.

I'd choose a 1200 or 1300 over a Mossberg any day and would only pick an 870 over them because of the short barrel availability. (I currently have 2 model 1300s and 1 model 1200 and 1 short 870 clone.) Fast gun too, if you learn to use it properly.

From what I've heard they can develop problems with the plastic feed lips cracking or with the action arms breaking. Never experienced any of those issues myself and I've owned several of them. Had one that was double feeding but a new mag spring fixed that.
 
Hi, i just got a Wichester 1200 with a 18" Barrel , is it usable for waterfowl hunting or do i look for a longer Barrel ?

I owned one once but sold it. Disadvantages for me compared to the 870 was the light weight due to the aluminum receiver (read: heavy recoil for hunting loads) and the need for a tool for field stripping. I never cared for the BPS due to the 'clunky' handling and the PITA field stripping. For me the 870 fits the bill. And yes, I own both the Wingmaster and Express models and have never had any problems with either model. Best bet is to see which model fits you best.

Out of curiosity, what did you need a tool for during feild stripping? I know the model 1200 would need to have the bridge screw removed, but can't think of what tool would be required to feild strip a 1300.
 
A screwdriver is required to remove the tiny screw to field strip the Winchester 1200/1300 pump shotguns. That tiny screw, IMHO, is easily lost or cross-threaded.

You can remove all major components for cleaning without removing that screw.

And if you are removing that screw you have technically gone beyond the definition of field stripping.
 
I'm aware of the screw needing to be removed from the bridge of the 1200 to remove the bolt, but I haven't incountered a 1300 with that screw yet. AFAIK that screw left with the older model # (1200)

Unless we are talking about the small philips head screw that retains the ejector. If that's the case you very rarely (if ever) need to remove the ejector to clean properly.
