So, I bought some 20 grain Winchester 17HMR ammo and had 2 case splits out of ~30 rounds, complete with FTE's because the case is wedged in the action.

A buddy of mine, buys different lot of Winchester 20 grain 17 HMR, and gets this on the first round.

When I had a .17 the federal premium was the best for me (in a savage 93r17)

I find in general winchester ammo is terrible. The only caliber I buy is .303 British because it is the cheapest I can find locally then I reload with the brass

Did the exact same thing to me. Split casings, crappy accuracy. Just plain horrible stuff I'll never buy it again. I run federal and Cci both are very good

I haven't had any split or stuck cases with Winchester 17HMR, but I have noticed it's not as accurate as anyone elses 17HMR.

Seriously, my rifle will handle CCI, Hornady and Federal with damn near the same results, but Winchester will make groups like a shot of buckshot.

Unfortunately I still have a few boxes to purge. At least it's not jamming anything, so I can still use it up and not worry. I just won't be buying anymore.

Looks a wee bit dangerous. I'd stay away from this. I don't know what has happened to Winchester over the years. Absolutely no quality control. No quality at all, for that matter.

Same experience here. I bought a bunch because it was cheap and it's what's available locally. Sadly it's poor quality. I usually have a few fail-to-fires in every box (although they'll fire if you take them out, rotate them and try again). A few split cases too. Worst has been cartridges coming out of the box with bullets mangled and sitting almost sideways in the case mouth.

I've got another box or two to shoot, then I'll be rid of them. I only but Federal, CCI, Hornady or Remington now.

I`ve only ever shot Hornady for both my HMR and HM2 (the HM2 being a Marlin semi-auto ,great little gun) the HMR being a Savage 93R17 (tack driver that one).

I`m glad I never tried the Winchester stuff ,thanks for the heads up !

Actually,I don`t think I buy much in the way of Winchester ammo at all, for any of my many guns........and that`s a few.

This is a well documented problem with that particular ammo send to winchester and they will send you a gift certificate you can use towards any products the parent company makes Olin is the parent Co. . I sent a case in and they sent me 150% value in return.

never had any split cases but my marlin 17hmr does not like the 20 grain bullets. has no problem shooting good groups with the Winchester 17 grain. have tried hornady, cci, federal and Winchester 17 grain all with the same accuracy so why spend more for the same.

I also didn't have any split cases, but I may as well have been shooting a 12 gauge. The super-X brass had a different profile to it than the CCI and Hornady stuff I have. The winchester has a very round rim and is thicker than the hornady/cci which appears to be identical. I have heard that all the HMR ammo comes from CCI except for Winchester who load their own. All the bullets are Hornady or Speer. Some rifles shoot it no problem but my CZ does not.
