They never stopped working.
About the only thing that is marginally "bad" about some of the "old tech" bullets, is that they were designed to expand reliably at the velocities of "old tech" cartridges, like the .308 and -06. If they are pushed to varmint caliber speeds, they behave, coincidentally, a little like a varmint bullet.
Ain't it amazing how many moose and deer have died because they don't have the internet? If they did, they'd have known that the bullets that hit them, couldn't possibly kill them, and they'd have been able to just walk away...
