Hi, I have just bought this Winchester 1886,deluxe lightweight take-down. It is 45-70
Best guess it was made in 1910( serial # check online). I have the Blue book of gun
values and theStandard catalogue of firearms, both current editions. Generally they don
Mean alot as far as pricing in Canada. There is a hair- line crack abou 4" back in the fore stock and the heel of buttpad is chipped. Works and functions great. I know where it came from and assume it hasn't been taken apart possibly forever but the tube unscrews easily and i didn't want to apply too much pressure on taking it apart yet. Any ideas on value? I would say conservatively a 50% condition firearm. I tried to dwnload a pic,(first time) i hope it worked Thanks

Sorry, pic didn't work. Rifle is all original with honest scuffs and hunting wear bluing on bbl and 3/4 tube is all there. No pitting but slight rust around front sight

Bore looks bright and shiny,no dark spots or rust. Rifling doen't look as strong as my 32win spcl but I'm trying to hold a phone flashlight in the breech and look down the muzzle

If you don't have a bore light another method is to open the action and insert a piece of white paper or even tissue at the face of the bolt and shine the flashlight directly on the white paper while looking down the bore. It'll light the bore up real nice.

Hard without pics. By Deluxe do you mean fancy wood, factory checkering, pistol grip etc. All of that stuff adds value to collectors. My advise would be get a factory letter if it has special order features. Usually the letter will list the features as ordered. Collectors love to see the rifle as shipped. Any modifications done later(unless it was returned to the factory for work) hurt the value badly. The letter will cost you less than $100 but no one can argue with it.

Thanks, I had never actually thought of that. I checked the Cody records and it is in the serial number
range that the warehouse letters cover so I'll give it a shot. BTW, that '75 Marlin is beautiful, I actually have the exact rifle. Thanks again on the letter info

and yes,it has the fancy wood, factory checkering. pistol grip and oddly it has a 3/4 mag tube where I've only read about 1/2 tube. Gotta get thaat letter coming

The 45-70 with 22inch barrel was actually called the Extra Light Model. The ones chambered for 33WCF had a 24” barrel, those were the Light Weight Models. Yes, they came standard from the factory with a 1/2 magazine, the 3/4 mag was an option. It is not that uncommon, i have had 3 ELWs with 3/4 maga, they are out there. I had always found them appealing with the 3/4 mag.
If you are a member of the BBHC (Cody Museum) like myself, you can also just have a serial number search done. All the same info, but comes in a PDF.
