I bought a 1892 (circa 1913) in 38-40 this past June for $400.00.Good bore but a little surface rust on metal.Cleaned her up and she looks good now.You can find them out there for less than what cabela's wants but i had to do some serious digging.

I agree with Swifty. If I were you I'd wait on an old original 1892...they`re out there, sometimes it just takes a little time and patience. You`ll find what you`re looking for in your price range. More fun shooting one of the old levers in my opinion too...can't beat it!

Or good old fashioned luck!
This one was found behind the door of a closet in an old house we bought from an estate years ago. Actually, the value of all the antiques and collectables that came with the house were worth more than the structure itself :D

Very nice 92. But, I have to tell you, I think it'd look better sitting next to mine:)
Seriously though, nice find. Gotta like those kind of little surprises! Wish I had that kind of luck....or, any luck at all really....

Keep looking, they are out there.
My 1892 came my way with a straight trade. For a 16 gauge black powder shotgun.

Kevin303 I have one here bore is mint all original, carried more than it was fired. Was my buddies fathers trapping rifle.Blueing about 50% to 60%.
