Hi all,
A friend of mine is thinking of selling me his winchester 1892 in 38-40 caliber and I'm wondering what the value of the rifle would be roughly.
It is a 1921 year with crescent buttplate and round barrel. appears to be about 80 percent plus blueing and has a peep sight mounted on the receiver.

The 1895 is a .303 british and made in 1904. appears to have refinished and cracked stock and appears to have conservative 60 percent blueing
if you could give me a ballpark on the rifles that would be great.
If someone is interested in it let me know.
Thanks!

Hard to be accurate without pics. If the 92 has a standard receiver sight(Lyman, Williams etc) it was added later in life and the drilling and tapping make the 92 a shooter not a collector. In the condition you describe, ball park $750. If the receiver sight is a period version maybe installed at the factory it would be worth much more but around that time tang peeps were the norm. The 1895 models generally don't command the prices of some other models. With a cracked stock and refinished wood around $500-$600 to me, others might pay more or less.

Hello,

It is extremely difficult to determine the potential value of a rifle based just on a verbal description of it. I am a moderator on the Gun Value Board and answer question solely with
regard to Winchesters. I am constantly surprised by what some folks think is "good" condition or excellent "for its age". If you want to email photos of the rifle I will be glad to take
a detailed look at it. Round barrel rifles are valued at about a 10 to 15 percent discount compared to a comparable octagon barrel rifle. If the receiver peep is a late add on that will
dramatically reduce the value as Mike Webb noted. Any chance it is the type in the photo? If so, that sight alone is worth $250 to $300! Can you use the reference material in this
link to characterize your rifle and post that data here? Can I also get the full serial number to determine the DOM?
