Looks like it was case hardened.You can get it certified by the Cody Museum for about $50. and this will give you exact day of manufacture and original configuration, shipping date etc. With this certicate the gun is worth much more. I have 2 - 1906 rifles done this way and would not consider less than $850 starters. Yours being a 38-55 will make it even more collectible
