I have a 45-70 sharps with montana vintage arms vernier sights on it that I shoot regularily and love the hell out of...and I recently made a cool acquisition...

I picked up a 1910 winchester 1894 at a gun show this past weeked in 30-30. It has factory CC set triggers so it would be a perfect mid-range (400 yd) target rifle imo.

I am debating throwing on a mid range sight from MVA and a combination flip up on the front. Any thought? Concerns? Not really sure if this is a good idea yet

I love the look of Vernier sights, something about them on an old gun looks cool.
I say go for it.

Quite a few 94's used in the cowboy silhouette game have had vernier sights installed and work wonderfully. A Lyman sight will work just as well out to 300 yrds but after that a vernier is needed for the extra elevation. My wife has a 30-30 94 with a vernier on it ( not sure who made it but think I robbed it off an Italian of some kind) and she does quite well with it. The trick is to find one that has the same tang angle base as a 94, otherwise you get a shadowy sight picture if your not looking absolutely square thru the hole.

I'm sure people have shot them to 500 yards but it wouldn't be my first choice.
The bullet drop at that range I would imagine would be over 10 feet.

Yea I was thinking the same thing...I suppose 38-55 is more suited to 500 and beyond. I think Ill get a sight sometime soon then I guess we'll see how far it goes in the spring :)

Some will and some don't, again the base manufacturer makes a difference, I would think (and I think some buddies have used them) that MVA bases would be manufactured for bolt clearance. they seem to cover all the bases when designing and manufacturing a product.

As for the 500 yrd thing , yes a 30-30 can hit something at 500 but it wont be very hard...but neither will a 38-55 unless your using a Ruger #1 that you can hotrod. Basically shooting a 30-30 at extreme distances is the same as any other rifle...shoot lots of trial and error until you have a ballistics table built specifically for your load and gun same as your 45-70's.
