Redoing a wreak of a 1895 in 30-40, found a NEW 1895 barrel in 7.62x54R on ebay. Gunsmith said I needed a mag that fits the Russian round to go with the gun. Found that finally but now the mag doesn't fit right. Was the 1895 Russian recievers different then regular ones. Plus does anyone have assembly instructions for he 1895....Bob
 
I'm not sure that the receiver is different, but I believe that the mag (body & internals) is. The 7.62R chambered guns were capable of being reloaded from stripper clips, none of the other versions of this gun were...

Looking at pictures of '95s seems to indicate that several mag bodies were used.

Personnally, I would rebarrel it in .303British or back in .30-40(IIRC same mag), while the 7.62x54R operates at considerably higher pressures.

I understand that the early 1895 is marginable to handle .30-06 pressures. I read it quoted once that most of the '95s sent back to the factory for repair were .30-06s...
