Winchester 1895 model in 30 06 (need id on Values)

OK my freind has a Winchester model 1895 in 30 06 lever gun marked US 1903 on barrel hes been trying to sell at gun shows.
i was holding it today.
Very nice gun ive never seen one up close before.

The Owners want like $900 for it is that realistic or inflated price.
I looked on GB but there all over the place price wise.
This gun is in pretty good condition tho i didnt inspect the bore.

Any ideas on Value in Canada ?
 
While the 30-06 is a desireable caliber in 95s it would take some bleing on the reciever to be getting up to the $900 range.
I agree with Dingus in that with a good bore it should run in the $600. range with the less desireable 303s & 30-40s going 50-100 less.

Then again what exactly is "pretty good condition" ?? many different interpretations to that phrase.:cool:
 
No its 30 06 caliber.
You two have seen it most likely its been at shows you were both at!
I dont want the gun myself just trying to figger a fair price to list it in the EE maby as a favor to help them prople sell it.
 
Should be a 30-03 with that barrel mark. Only difference in a 30-06 and 03 is that the 03 neck is 2mm longer.
 
Both the .30-03 & the .30-06 cartridges were developed by Winchester for the US Government:

.30-03 translates to .30 caliber of 1903.
.30-06 translates to .30 caliber of 1906.

The .30-03 is quite scarce and would command a premium over more common calibers such as the 303Br and 30 US (30-40 Krag), etc. If it is indeed a 30-06 (though from what you've wrote it sounds like a .30-03) remember that the 1895's in .30-06 had some difficulties with bolt face peening & setback (sometimes resulting in excess headspace) when factory loads were upgraded & pressures increased...good to keep in mind when buying one.

Hard to give a price without knowing more about condition? Condition (i.e % blue remaining, original finish, etc, etc,) is everything with these guns.

I could have sworn that the 30-03 and the 30-06 were both designed at the Springfield Amory hence 30-06 springfield. I would say that if it was a carbine or musket it would fetch more if its just a standard rifle then the above prices seem correct.
 
Yup, I did some snooping on the internet, and according to what I read, they were designed at the Springfield armoury. I was told the above information by an 1895 collector / entusiast recently...you should see his collection of 1895s, they're to die for!... and it just stuck with me. Could it be that they are Winchester designed cartridges for the govt, but developed or tested at Springfield? I'm not sure of the exact relationship between Winchester and the Armoury at that time.
Anyway, off topic here I guess:)

So are you guys saying a 30 06 wont chamber and shoot in the Gun :confused:

It had 1903 on the Barrel i Remember that clearly.
 
If the gun was made after 1908 then it is chambered for the 30-06 and if before for the 30-03. The 30-03 is .07" longer than the 06 so you can chamber an 06 in an 03 but not vice versa. What may be a problem is the twist rate of the barrel --- the original military bullet was 220 grains (for the 03) and this was dropped to 170 for the 06 and then changed again I think. If the gun were an early one it might handle most any slug while if made shortly after 1908 might not light heavy bullets. You might also want to look for a rim recess in the off chance that the gun is a 30-40 Krag.

My personal preference was a rifle length in 303; easy to get ammo for and the one that I traded to Steppenwolf was accurate and just sort of hung there when you aimed it. The only carbine I have seen felt awfully heavy for some reason.

The only 30-03s I have seen were stamped 30-03 but then I haven't seen them all :D

My fav is the 30-40 because you can use any .308 cal bullet, that said I traded away a nice 30-40 to get a slightly nicer .303 :redface:
