Hi Folks,

Looking to pick up something unique and the Winchester/Miroku 1895 has caught my eye. Only real use case would be the novelty of owning it and firing off a box of it's expensive and hard to find ammo once a year. I have found ONE retailer with the ammo in stock.

I understand these are also produced in the more common 30-06 but I cannot find one in Canada anywhere.

Anybody own, shot or handled one? Are they worth it purely for the aesthetic value?

Thanks!

I’ve handled one of the vintage Winchester guns in 30-06 extensively when a buddy and I go scouting. If you want a powerful lever gun that can use modern bullets they are a good option. But they are only really a necessity in 405 if you’re around big bears. As you’re in Ontario. I’d wait for a 30-06 or maybe a vintage 303 before I picked up a 405.

Back in the day when they didn't have the powders, guns or advancements in ballistics we have now, the .405 was something necessary. Now, a stiffly loaded 45-70 will serve the purpose much better, and you'l have a much better selection of factory ammo and components.

Those guns really shine in .303 or 30-06. I have one in 30-40 krag thats going to be rebarrelled to .303 when I get the time. Nice guns, especially if you like mechanical toys, but the lever throw is long along with the bolt travel. Aesthetically I like them, but for shooting I prefer my 1886 in every way.

I have this one a Miroku winchester 95 saddle ring carbine replica in 30/06.These are excellent guns and the 95 action is super slick

Not cheep , not for the weak of heart or of shoulder !
If your willing to pay market value I know a guy ( collector in Montreal ) that will most likely have one or two or will know where to find one depending on type ( original, deluxe or commemoratives ) and caliber .

I'd keep the bugger in 30-40 Krag meself. Nice cartridge to load for with hardcast boolits. Jacketed projectiles are dandy as well.
Pity Miroku don't make the '95 in it's most produced original chambering, the 7.62x54R. I would be happy with one of those. ;)

Agreed on the 1886 action in 45-70 for a versatile big bore. I use a Pedersoli 86/71 and the bugger shoots tight with cast.

Have handled the new Winchester Model 1895 rifles in .405 WCF.Never fired one,but it appeared a nice well made rifle.Have fired an original Model 1895 in .405 WCF.Fun rifle to shoot and in a calibre that always draws attention.

I should really sit down and scrub the barrel and see what there's left for rifling, original barrel might be salveagable but it was made in 1904 and looks pretty dark in there. Defintely needs a new stock. I agree it is a nice cartridge.

I have a .35wcf and a .405(2005) and foolishly sold a 38/72, Browning 30/06 and a Win .270. Really wish I had kept the .270 as not that many survived sitting on LGS racks before being returned to Winchester to be re-barreled to .405's as who would want a .270 that you couldn't scope.
I've only shot the .405 a few times and it does get your attention but not any worse than a .348 Carbine or a moderate/heavy loaded 45/70.

I would like to see winchester bring back the 95 carbine reissue that I have in 303brit like Ruger did with their number 1 .They could call it the Canuck limited edition. The 95 rifles and carbines seem to have been quite popular in Canada back in the day especially with those living in the more remote areas
