Winchester 1895 SRC

I was lucky enough to snag a beautiful example re-barrelled in 375 Hawk-Scoville. Even has the original Lyman 21.
The chap behind the counter when he was checking it out for me (phoned in order as soon as I saw it) commented how he couldn't understand why people wanted these "old" rifles with the availability of more modern designs.
I bit my tongue, said nothing and just grinned to myself.
Does that make me a Fudd? I feel I'm too young...
 
I have a Model 1895 in.405 calibre ,that I purchased back in the mid 1970s.Nice rifle,but I must admit ,the Model 1895 is my least favourite of the old style Winchester lever rifles.

I have two 1895 's , both in .405 . 1 is a Deluxe , which I have shot moose & elk with . The other is a standard grade . I also have a SRC
in .30 US , which shoots 2" groups @ 100 yds. Then there is a TD in '06 . All interesting Win. models @ the tail end of the Old West .
 
I recently got an 1895 when my grandfather passed, it was made in 1906 and chambered in 30-03. Now this is hard ammo to find. Yes i know that you can resize .270 brass or just shoot 30-06(shorter neck) To be honest with ya i wasn't a fan of the 1895 till i actually put my hands on one that had some family history.

I like them all, although I admit the '95 is not the most photogenic of the bunch.

Anyone thinking of getting a 405 rifle had better get the brass first. I don't think anyone sells 405 brass currently. I was lucky to find four boxes of loaded 405 ammo by Hornady after I bought my 1885 Winchester. I might have been stuck with an 1885 paperweight if I did not get lucky finding discontinued ammo.

There's still Hornady brass in .405 locally in Central AB.Not a fan of Hornady brass but it's better than nothing.
 
Sorry to have sold the one I had in 35 Winchester; but I still have two in 30-40, a rifle and a carbine. They are more than adequate for deer and moose when used correctly. I am restoring one in 303 with an original Lyman 21 sight; keep hoping to find a 405 barrel but can always replace in the future.
 
After an exhaustive search I managed to find one in good condition for a fair price from one of the site sponsors :) .303 Brit manufactured in 1903

Question for those in the know, can this thing take pressures of factory 303 ammo, or do I need to handload to reduce the pressures?

They built them in 30-06. Any standard 303 ammo should be fine. - dan
