I've read a lot of posts but didn't find the same issue than mine.

My 1897, dated 1904, in 12 Ga doesn't feed.
When I action the pump, all parts move fine: carrier and all of them.
But the shells in the tube remain there....

When I press the (side ejectors) shell cutoffs, the shells get ejected normally, but that's not the right way !

I misnamed the shell cutoffs, accroding to Rod's comment (thanks Rod).

The whole gun has been disassembled, cleaned and reassembled.
I"m using 2 3/4 shells, and as I've read some comments on 2 1/2 shell length, can it be the issue ?

Does anybody know where I can buy such shells in Canada ?
I've found some in the US but for sure they don't ship to Canada..

Any idea or comment is welcome.

Thanks.

Little difficult to understand exactly what you're describing here..

What are you referring too as the side ejectors? . There's a button on the right side of the receiver to allow the action to open when the hammer is cocked. All 1897's in 12 ga came from the factory with chambers for 2 3/4" shells.

The shells are held in the magazine by the shell cutoff. When the action opens; the carrier moves downward and on it's way to full open it depresses the shell cutoff allowing one shell to come out and lay on top of the carrier. When the action slide is pulled forward the carrier returns up and slips the shell rim between the left right extractors on the bolt face and the bolt proceeds to push the shell into the chamber and the gun is in battery. To eject a live round from the chamber, pull forward on the action slide till you hear a click and then move the action slide to the rear and the shell should eject and another shell from the magazine will repeat the procedure.

When you fire a round, no need to pull forward on the action slide as the recoil does that for you.

Thanks Rod

I replaced the misnamed ejectors by shell cutoffs in my post.

Thank you for describing the whole process but it doesn't bring an answer, thanks anyway.

If you can't find 2.5" shells, look for short 2 3/4. They are not all the same length!
I had a 1924 Remington Model 10 with the same issue. It would shoot the old blue Cannuck brand just fine, but not the High Brass Imperial loads available back then. The crimp was different, and it made a tiny difference in length that allowed it to work.

Your left or right cartridge (likely left) interrupter or cutoff is not moving enough to release a shell from the mag tube. It is likely dirt or other foreign matter behind one or both. Excessive wear to the carrier could also be the culprit. Clean and check. There is a yoo tube video called model 1897 X ray that shows how they should work.
