I like the old 1897, I have a few and just got another to add to what is a motley frankenstein-ish group of shotties. Anyhow, the one I got was pretty stuck and not operating correctly from years being.....somewhere.

I took it home, stripped and cleaned the works and found that the cartridge guide flap doesn't....flap up. It moves, but with work and isn't free enough to flap up when in the gun.

Now this isn't new, a couple of my others don't do it either and its always bugged me. I know its crud and stuff in behind the flap, but my question is does anyone have a way to clean it out?? I would like to blow them out somehow without having to pop the rivet out.

Thanks in advance for any comments or help.

Hey Bro Russian. I just had the same problem with a gun I aquired a while ago and hadn't used yet. Don't think it had ever been disasembled or internally cleaned since new(ca.1910).I had to take it apart to rob a piece to fix the other half's gun for AFS.

Back to the subject.. I soaked the elevator in gas over night and then blew it off with the air hose..some sucsess but not enough so I soaked it two nights in diesel fuel, rinsed with gas and another shot with the air and it was coming around nicely. the last two nights I sprayed it with G96 and rinsed with gas and blew it off after each night. After that it worked passably..not perfect but usable.

If your not equiped with high pressure air or don''t want to mess with all that flamables in the city ,give it to Maria or I the next time we meet.

O.E.

OE,

Thank you, that would be great, I have a feeling that's exactly what's going to be needed. This shotty was the same, it had so much dirt and debris is every area that I could have planted a tree in it.

We'll have to connect soon! Beers or Scotch for payment!

Thanks again.

no bargin' here Bob, its all good, being a public thread and all. We do generally hang out with a rough looking bunch of Winchesters, goes with the territory I suppose. :D As for knowin where some rough ones are for you, I can't say off the top, depends on what you're looking for and how much you want to pay.
