Winchester 1897 Trench gun

I remember David Fortier writing an article or maybe a post on Arfcom where he took an old 1897 and updated it for home defense. Cut it down to 18” or so, rubber but pad, 2 3/4” chamber, parkerised and Bob’s your uncle.

I check the EE every now and then for a beater to do the same with.

I have 2 that I use for Wild bunch, great guns, but a hundred little bits and springs. One of the things they say at the cowboy matches is that you need 3. 1 to shoot, 1 for a spare and one at the gunsmith getting fixed. For home defense I would reach past both of them and grab my Wingmaster though. They can be finicky and have a habit of locking up every now and then, but still, there is just something about them.

My well used but legit m97 trenchgun. It supposedly came from that Vietnam shipment as well.

I think the practical home defense crowd likes them in the US because A) Wild Bunch and B) down there, you can leave them loaded with one in the chamber, and just de-#### the hammer. Some people go nuts over slamfire too, although I can't see how that would make it any better.

Well said TheCoachZed!!
This is one of 2 videos Paul Harrell had made on the Winchester 1897 (although not specifically the trench gun version) . His is an excellent explanation of the features and operation of this shotgun!

I love the '97!! I had 5 of them in my safe at one time, and also owned the Chinese copy of the trench gun.
