Came across this today while at the Winchester web site.

Winchester is warning and recalling some 22LR ammo lots that might contain double powder charges!

Note that the lot numbers are stamped without ink and thus hard to read and is not the carton number that is printed in ink on the other box tab.

Check your ammo!

PRODUCT WARNING AND RECALL NOTICE: WINCHESTER® WILDCAT® 22 & WINCHESTER® XPERT® 22

4/6/2007

Olin Corporation, through its Winchester Division, is recalling several lots of its WILDCAT® 22 (Symbol Number WW22LR) and XPERT® 22 (Symbol Number XPERT22) 22 Long Rifle rimfire ammunition.

Lot Numbers containing Letters: XN, YA, YB or YC

Through extensive evaluation Winchester has determined the above lots of WILDCAT® 22 and XPERT® 22 ammunition may contain double powder charges. Double powder charge weight ammunition may cause firearm damage, rendering the firearm inoperable, and subject the shooter to a risk of personal injury and/or death when fired.

DO NOT USE WINCHESTER® WILDCAT® 22 RIMFIRE AMMUNITION WITH LOT NUMBERS CONTAINING LETTERS XN, YA, YB or YC. The ammunition Lot Number is imprinted (stamped without ink) on the outside of the right tuck flap of the 50-round box, as indicated here:

To determine if your ammunition is subject to this notice, review the Lot Number. If the Lot Number contains the letters XN, YA, YB or YC return the ammunition to Winchester via United Parcel Service (UPS). Securely pack the ammunition into a corrugated cardboard box, write “CARTRIDGES, SMALL ARMS ORM-D” on the outside, and ship to:

Olin Corporation – Winchester Division
Tile Warehouse
Powder Mill Road, Gate 4A
East Alton, IL 62024
Attention: 22LR Recall

Please include your name, address, and phone number. Winchester will send you coupons good for replacement ammunition from your local Winchester dealer.

This notice applies only to WILDCAT® 22 and XPERT® 22 rimfire ammunition with Lot Numbers containing the letters XN, YA, YB or YC. Other Symbol Numbers or Lot Numbers are not subject to this recall and should not be returned to Winchester.

If you have any questions concerning this recall please call toll-free 866-423-5224 (U.S. & Canada), write to the above address, or visit our website at www.winchester.com.

We apologize for this inconvenience.

Well I just pounded off 500 rounds of the Xperts today and thankfully nothing bad happened. I wish I had the box to check if the one I had was recalled.

Thanks for the heads up. I did have some wildcats lying around, they were not recall batch though. :)

i just went through 500 hundred win expert.of course box is in the garbage and long gone.i had a lot of split shells from that box after i fired them.any which way i wont use them again in my 22.it didnt like that stuff at all.

I bought a 500 box and when I started taking them out I noticed all the leads were extremely loose.I returned it to C.T. and bought something else.I had 22 mags Dynapoints and had soooo many misfires and a couple double charges out of 1 box that I vow never to buy Winchesters again

Yeah right. Shipping dangerous goods to the U.S.? Excuse me while I apply for all the necessary export permits and then pay triple what the shells cost to ship them.

I have two boxes that dont work worth a crap in my 10-22. Unfortunatly they dont fall under the recall. Maybe if I had double the charge they would work. :D They just kinda fall out of the breach instead of flying out like the others do. That is if they dont get caught by the bolt.

I'm pretty green at all this, but I do have a box on the recalled Expert 22LR. Only about 60 bullets left. Thought they were crap as they jammed up my MkII, and were spitting out pieces when fired from a Taurus 94.

I would like to have them replaced, but shipping back via UPS ? To US ? The friggin box was only 15.00 or so to start with.

Am I missing something here ? Do the coupons sent back by Winchester just replace the box ? Cause it is going to cost more than that value to ship...

Thanks for any advice or experience.

You could try taking them back to where you bought them with a printout of the Winchester Recall Notice. If you got them at WallyWorld or Cambodian Tire you should have no problem. Or email Winchester and see what they suggest. These are the things I would try first.

Thanks for the reply - this box did come from WallyWorld as a cheap "get to know your guns" brick. I knew I wasn't gonna break any records with the stuff, and expected a few misfires, but not the double whammy's reported.

Will print off the recall and see what Sam Walton says - will report back.

Would a double charge actually damage a good condition .22LR? Granted, it wouldn't be GOOD for it, but would you expect catastrophic failure like in a centerfire?

I have no idea what normal chamber pressures are in a .22...

I called Winchester today and reported the quality of the cartridges that I have and that it would not be worth me sending them back. They are sending me two coupons for replacement. Do not have send them back.

22 LR, 22 Mag, 17 Mach 2 are loaded to 24,000 psi max average pressure (MAP) with the Piezo system, crusher is no longer used in rimfire.
17 HMR is loaded to 26,000 psi max average pressure (MAP).

Update

called the US 1 800 number, and a lady very quickly took the lot number, and all my mail coordinates (looking good so far), and then put me on hold for a minute. No talk of shipping back. She came back on and said i would just need to call a (sp?) Kerry Myles 705-749-0622, Cdn Rep, to get looked after.

Called Mr. Myles, who was very polite and answered directly on the first ring. Unfortunately, the only info he had was to ship back to US, which I explained was not a satsifactory option for various well known reasons. He said he would check it out and get back to me. Will report results once known...
