Winchester .40 S&W with primer pocket crimp??

Has anyone else seen this recently?

I was fortunate enough to get to the range to pick up a bunch of 1F Winchester .40S&W, but it was definitely a mixed blessing.

Nearly all of the primer pockets show some crimp and maybe 25% have enough crimp to not allow me to seat primers. (Dillon XL650, Federal Magnum Pistol Primers)

I will try 100 Winchester SPP, but I expect the same issue. The crimp is quite noticeable and the primers just won't fit.

With some of them I have tried case mouth deburring tool to attack the primer pocket, but a light de-burring doesn't solve the problem.

Any thoughts? Any suggestions?

Perhaps a full decrimping operation is in order.
This is a pain, but only has to be done once.
Trying to force primers past the remains of a crimp doesn't work out well.
 
Never heard of crimped .40 S&W. Is it NT ammo?
You may need to swage the primer pockets. .40 S&W does use a small pistol primer and you don't need magnum primers.
 
Ya I've had the same thing. Seems to be a few will sneak in every so often out of the brass I pick up. Personally I've just been tossing those ones. But it can jam up the press ..
 
Have had some Win NT with crimp. I sort by headstamp before loading and swage these with a RCBS swager. Had some federal NT with the same situation.

Look on the bright side. At least you are sure these are once fired!!! :)

Thank you for the posts. Sorry I haven't been back for a while. The IPSC Ontario Provincials was last week (can you guess why I was loading 1F brass????).

The brass was picked from an indoor range, but I don't remember any more than a couple live rounds in the pile, and I don't remember if they were frangible or not, but I think that this is probably the real answer because the range rentals are usually security groups.

The inside of the brass LOOKED like WinClean, but the brass was NOT head-stamped with NT, just the standard Winchester headstamp.

I will try to post an image, just as an FYI (and also show some creatively-crushed primers!).
