I bought a little sack (7/8lbs~) of powder this morning, its the only thing they had; Winchester 452
Interested into reloading 12gauge 7/8-1oz, standard cheap winchester and federal bulk hull and winchester AA wad.
looks like its an old product because i cant find much information online, not enough to be sure am not making something dangerous. So am asking you guys.

its the only thing i found:
452AA Shotgun Loads

452AA 12 gauge:

==============

"Standard 16yd trap load":

19.5gns 452AA
1.125oz payload

452AA is listed in the tenth edition Winchester Reloading Components Catalog and Ball Powder Propellant Loading Data, copyright 1985. Per Winchester, this is the powder to duplicate the ballistics of 12 ga Double AA factory loads.

The load described as duplicating the factory Winchester 2-3/4 dram equivalent AA plus Target Load is:

-----------

1-1/8 oz shot

Win 209 primer
19.5 gr of 452AA powder
WAA12 wad in a compression-formed hull

-----------

12 gauge, 1 1/8 oz

Win AA, (obviously these aren't the new HS) Hulls.
25 gr. 473AA*
Win 209 Primer
Win WAA12 (White) wad
1255 fps 9,500 LUP

*Reduce the powder to 23.5 gr. 473AA
All other components same gives you 1200 fps and 8,500 LUP

**The same two recipes work for the Rem RXP hulls but add 100 LUP pressure to each. I believe those would be the old green ribbed hulls.

Wow, haven't seen a can 452AA since about 1997. The only data I still have on it is an old Lee Load All loading table. They listed 19.7gr for 2 3/4 dr.eq. loads under 1 oz and 1.125Oz load in a compression formed hull. Heaviest load listed was for 21gr. in 1Oz. This was listed as circa 1984, so take it with a grain of salt.

same result ive found.
Alright, will load 5 with 18-19grain. if everything goes alright ill load a bunch.

its a little bag, the seller ordered by drum full of powder and loaded little bag a couple years back.

I loaded 452AA for years in AA's ... and have a copy of the Winchester Ball Powder Reloading Data "Tenth Edition" (1985) on my desk.
In 12 ga., published data was for 7/8, 1 oz and 1-1/8 oz loads only.

With compression formed AA, Upland or Super X hulls, Win 209 primers and the old WAA12FI (pink 1 oz.) wad, (not the same as todays AA 1 oz. pink wads) charges of 452AA ran 19.0 gr. for the 7/8 oz. load at 1210 fps. (one load only) 20.0, 21.5 & 23.0 gr. for the 1 oz load for 1180, 1235 & 1290 respectively and for the 1-1/8 oz. load with WAA12 (white) wads, 19.5 gr & 20.5 gr at 1145 and 1200 fps respectively.

473AA was the powder used to duplicate the AA 20ga. target loads, but could also be used for 12 ga 1-1/8 oz. target and field loads
(1200 -1330) and for a couple of 1-1/4 oz field loads at 1150 and 1220.

I'd be a little concerned about a "sack" of older powder. Doesn't sound like the best air-tight storage ... and resultant exposure to degradation by oxidization & humidity.

I used up the last of my 452AA powder in 12 ga trap loads about 5 years ago. [20.0 grains. AA pink wad in AA hulls, 1 oz of #8]
However, I have some 473AA that I am still using for light bullet loads in my
357 Magnum revolver.
I have never used a cleaner powder in my 357 than 473AA.
I can fire 50 rounds and the barrel and cylinder look shiny and spotless.
Regards, Eagleye.
