Winchester 490 LR

the barrels on both 490s i have are marked LR only. could shoot shorts but they may not have enough power to overcome the reload spring on the bolt. one 490 dom is 1974 and the other 1985.

Yep, made in Cobourg. They're higher end rifles that have a sterling reputation. Best thing about 'em is the full grown, adult, bull human, sized stock vs the much smaller stocks on most .22's. You still have to try as many brands of ammo as you can to find the ammo it'll both shoot well and cycle the action. The cost of said ammo is irrelevant.

I have one I bought off a retired RCMP officer about twenty years ago.He said he had drug it all across the country including the NWT.I paid, iirc, $175 for it back then.I have put many thousands of rounds through the old girl and wouldn't part with it for twice what I paid. It's been a great old rifle. They were made the size they are so they are a match for the win 100 semiauto centerfire rifles. You could practice with the cheap .22 ammo in the 490 and the go hunting with your centerfire 100 and they felt really similar.
If retired RCMP officer D. Tupper is reading this, you're old 490 is still going strong and has taught an awful lot of kids how to shoot.

I've got 2 and putting a 3rd together soon.Got lots of parts from the old Winchester plant as well. One thing I've found is that if I used cheap ammo even if it worked no prob the ammo would cause the ejector to break.Don't know why but the ejectors were maybe too brittle and prone to breaking ?.Love the 490's as they look and feel just like the 100's.
