Received a Winchester 490, 2- 5round and 1- 10 round clips from my late Grandfather, any info on it. Is it a good shooter and problems with it. I was thinking about a 10/22 but now I have this so I am not to sure know. Any clips larger then a 10 shot availible? Were can someone find mor clips or for it?

Receive seems dirty or dusty need to clean it, were would one find a manual for it or how do u clean semi autos?
 
That brings back memories.

From memory:
Remove trigger guard.
Remove action and barrel from stock.
Unscrew the large hex nut under the chamber.
I think there is a notch you have to line up to rermove the handle from the bolt as you move the bolt and barrel forward out of the action.
Do not twist the barrel as that will damaged the ejector.

My old 490 went to Australia to help a friend with Roo harvesting back in the early 80's.
Do you need a diagram?

Hey, Tinman, I have one as well. This is my first 22 semi auto rifle I got as soon as I could legally purchase one in 1978.
Great little rifle, i have a 10/22 as well. But I found the trigger better on the 490, and as is, it certainly was more just a little bit more accurate than the standard ruger.

I used it for many years gopher hunting in Saskatchewan, and I found that after 300- 400 rounds I had to detail strip the 490 to get all the carbon out that would build up and jam the rifle.

Really the fact that i could buy larger capacity magazines for the ruger, and the ruger would last to almost 800 rounds before requiring cleaning, was the only reasons I picked up a 10/22.

And no there are no presently made mags bigger than 10 rounds available that I am aware of.....for the 490.
I believe they stopped making the 490 in and around 1976-77.

Western Gun Parts, was my source for spare parts, just cause they do not catalogue some firearms, does not mean they do not have one or two parts rifles in the warehouse.

You have a nice Canadian made, 22 semi there Tinman.

There are many poorer quality 22 rifles out there, going for more money than they are really worth!

My 490 is a great shooter, and it feels like a full sized rifle.
It really works well with PMC zapper22 if you can find them.
I have been able to pick them up at gun shows when I find them.
As diopter said take it apart and give it a good cleaning and enjoy.

I picked up a 490 a short time ago and mine came with real nice wood. I have only ever used one type of ammo in it and that is the Federal copper plated 38 grain AE22, at $18.00 for 400 its tough to beat and fairly accurate at 50 yards.There is also some info out there that suggests that if your gun has an asterisk or a star right after the serial number that it has been manufactured a little differently to reduce the possibility of jamming frequently as I am told the earlier guns in this model were prone to do.FS
 
The only time my 490 ever jammed was after my first cleaning and reassembly session. I didn't take care in aligning the magazine support. That's the first place I'd look if it starts to jam on you.

It's a nice full size rifle; doesn't feel like a .22.
