Winchester 70 rebarrel/caliber change...which action?

If I was going to spend the money on a custom rifle, I would use the action that would have the best resale value. imo and many others, that would be a pre64. I would chamber a standard action in 270,280 or 30-06. If I had a short action M70 I would chamber it in 284win.
Banking on the resale on custom rifles is a very sketchy proposition. I bought a Pre64 that had been rechambered and had the bolt face opened up for the cost of the action.

It really better be done by a top notch smith. And be exactly what someone wants. Otherwise resales probs gonna suck either way eh?

Its a rebarrel job. I expect to lose money on it if I ever sell it. Way she goes. If it was a 30-06 or 270 I was after i'd just leave it be and not bother, since the rest of the rifle not being custom is just fine with me.

I had a model 70 classic (CRF) featherweight in 6.5x55 and gave it to my nephew. It’s a nice little rifle. I’ve had a few of the classics and every one fed, fired, and grouped very well. I actually think the classics handle gas better than the pre64 versions but that’s a small thing. Unless you get a pre64 cheap, I would build on your stainless classic or pick one up to rebarell. You like them and they work great.

Myself I prefer my FN ‘98 mauser custom in the Swede but spent quite a bit of $$ adding a hinged floor plate and Winchester style safety, etc. I really like the Winchester style, 3 position safety, partly because of familiarity.

Get what you like and trust. The 6.5x55 won’t care either way.

Looking at probably $1200 minimum these days for a decent barrel and install, that isn't cheap anymore lol.
Never get any of that back if you get tired of it and want to move it.
There is no shortage of HVA 1600/1900 and many other pretty nice Euro trash made rifles at Intersurplus for $500-$900, so I dunno, the 6.5x55 shoots good in any rifle I've had, like a custom barrel isn't going to improve anything accuracy wise anyway.
I'm sitting on a near new Schultz & Larsen M98 heavy target barrel in 6.5x55, 26", enough meat on it to put it on anything modern. I've thought about the same thing, put it on a 700 turned down to a #2 contour, would be nice, but is it going to do anything better then a $500 PH or HVA that I already have? Not really.
I THINK if/when I do commit to working that barrel onto something, it won't be in 6.5x55, some standard case head, but something different and unique, I'm going to be stuck with it anyway, like a 6.5x64 (necked down 7x64) or maybe a 6.5-280AI, easy to form brass, some decent performance over the 6.5x55, would hang or exceed the 6.5PRC and not be stuck with 3 fat short rounds in the mag.
Damn...might have talked myself into a custom while trying to talk you out of one lol.
Gunnutz...lol

Hahaha thats the way it goes! I'd try to talk you out of it but that would only continue the cycle.

You're right of course, but rationalizing won't talk me out of this madness either haha. Think its just a matter of wanting one of my favorite rifles in one of my favorite cartridges.

1200 bones for a barrel and install would make a guy look real close at that P-64 in a Mickey in 6.5-06 on the EE for 1500….. 1-9” twist is the only short coming I seen with it if a person wanted to shoot the fancy high bc boolits. If I was a betting man though I’m just about certain it would run a 140 hotcore or 120ttsx through a venison quite nicely!

Someone seems to have snagged it!

If it was in a chambering I had any interest in, I'd be all over it. Great deal for someone out there.

If you plan on using a two locking lug action and reloading there is nothing stronger or safer than a Rem 700 with the enclosed extractor system.

Pre 64 M70 or "Classic" is your choice. What ever is cheaper...

I believe you on action strength and safety for sure, but I'm not too worried about the Winchester ever injuring me either. Perhaps its all between my ears, but I like the idea of the Winchester trigger and extractor besides just finding them cool.
