Anyone know if there is a modern replica of the bolt mounted peep sight that came on delux grade Winchester 71's? I recently picked up a Browning 71 and would like to mount a bolt peep on it.
While not exactly the same, and probably an outrage to the purists, the bolt peep sight seems to be a gallows style receiver sight like the Lyman 57 or the Williams Fool Proof. I doubt if either of these sights would look out of place on a 71.
Williams fool proof sights, while very effective, have always looked somwhat cheap compared to the all steel lymans. If I can't find a bolt peep a lyman sight will be the one I throw on there.
If you look at a Win71 that has a factory bolt peep you will see that there is extra milling and a drilled and tapped hole on top of the bolt - would be very difficult to duplicate on your Browning. There's an outfit in the U.S. that makes replica ones, I believe they're in the $300 - $400 range. To find an original one would be very costly. I would get the receiver tapped and put a Lymans rcvr. sight on it.
Hope this helped some! Don.

Like you, I thought the Williams looked cheap until the Lyman snapped so I tried a Redfield and the "ugly" Williams ....so far they are standing up to the recoil. Now I don't put the Lyman on anything heavier than a '94.
