Found a Winchester 77 a few weeks ago at a pawn shop for a decent price so I picked it up. Took it out and found that it was a jam-o-matic. Sometimes the rifle will wind up stove-piping and other times it will wind up with 2 shells lodged in it.
I disassembled the rifle, cleaned everything and the extractor looks good, but it was missing the e-clip and timing rod collar (part 6977). I got a new e-clip for the timing rod and used some very small washers to emulate the collar, which from photos I've found online should be 5mm long. The timing rod collar seems to provide some more pressure to the timing spring and the bolt flying back.
This didn't really seem to have much effect. I did have some better luck shooting a few full mags (after-market 7 round mag) without a single jam. But the factory mag still jams every shot or every second shot. And the after-market mag jammed a lot still too.
Besides experimenting with more washers or less washers on the timing rod, is there anything else I should be looking at?
(EDIT: I am shooting 40gr CCI Mini Mags.. so there should be no problem with ammo, tried Federal 40gr high power too).
