posting for a buddy - He got a Winchester Model 88 in .308 a while back, at the same time someone else gave him some handloads that were shot from a different gun. So he tries the handloads and finds the gun won't extract them , you need to tap them out with a cleaning rod. Not only that but now factory loads do not always extract reliably , when before shooting the reloads , they did.

So what gives ? Recommended fix ? Thanks.

It is an old gun and the design makes it hard to clean properly...
The chamber may require cleaning or possibly polishing - best left to a gunsmith...

Guntech - Good advice .

If a fellow had to tackle the problem himself could you try steel wool wadded around a cleaning brush, rotating against the chamber maybe ? Going slow , check often. The fellow in question is time rich and money poor, a bit isolated.

I don't know much about the Winchester 88 as far as problems go, someone told me the wood next to the receiver sometimes splits but no particular mechanical problems with the actions as far as I know. Quite nice guns , a relative has a good Model 88 in .284

The problem in trying to clean or polish the chamber is accessing it when the barrel is in the action... you can only reach in through the ejection port at an angle...

Remington makes/offers an off set brush for cleaning the chambers of their semi auto rifles, 740, 742, 7400, 750 etc. I use my 750 brush to clean the chambers on my 88's and 100's they work well. Little advice some guys make reloads that I wouldn't use to prop a door.

cheers Darryl
