Winchester 88 - Value?

So i may soon be in the position to acquire a Winchester Model 88. Its near the top of my "want list" and the current owner is a long time member of my hunt camp. The gun is in good to great shape (wood and metal very minor blemishes with very little wear). Its in .308 WIN.

What do these go for? Are spare mags impossible to find?

Mags are not hard to find. I posted a WTB and had 3 responses in short order. I think that the best price I found though was through Brownells. Not sure if htey would ship a magazine to Canada though. Sold the rifle to a friend of mine before I picked up a spare mag. I'm not sure but I may have paid $400, similar circumstances. Ex-girlfriend's Dad called saying he wasnt hunting anymore. I think at that price we both did okay. I wanted to be fair.
 
price is certainly a dicker-able one, man! pre or post '64? carbine or not? condition, yep dicker for sure! Spare mag, well now, around this neck of the woods, most mags are priced at almost, but just under a 100 bucka-rures. Pay or no get! I do have a mag for sale, need $85. plus shipping for it! 100-308. Luck shoppen. A double/maybe triple, step up from the Win 88 is a Sako Finnwolf, but triple the price! And usually a long long long wait for one to pop up! It's worth the wait!
 
Blue book value puts the things I thiiink from memory at a potential 750 at around 60%. That being said I would never pay that, so pay what the market will bear. You can make the argument that 308 versions get valued at less that a 243 or 284 in the book. If he won't say what he wants just make an offer you can live with.
 
Model 88 and model 100 clips are not the same.Finnwolfs are half the gun of an 88,and are not real hard to find.Clips are about 75 for the 88,and less for the 100 around here.
 
750 if in perfect, and i mean perfect condition. Like NIB.

500$ tops for the one you're talking about OP. And this is coming from a big 88 fan.
 
Find out if it is a pre or post 64. The pre-64 will have cut checkering on the stock and the post 64 will have impressed basket-weave pattern on the stock. Assuming good to very good condition, I would say a fair price on a pre-64 is $650 and a post-64 to be around $550. More accurate description of condition could change this +/- $50-$75. Should have a front sight hood as well (doesn't really affect value but something to consider). Also make sure you find out if the stock has been cut and a recoil pad added. This is common and affects the value especially in the pre-64s. Check the length of pull (middle of rear sling swivel to end of stock) to see if it has been shortened. Mags are not impossible to find but could run you around $100 (not worth it or necessary in my opinion). Although the .308 is the most common 88, it is getting harder to find nice ones in excellent shape. Let us know how you make out with it, I'm sure you will love it. My 88s are my favourite rifles. yep, mags are about $95 or Plus - Minus, give or take a peanut or two, like it or not! If you find them in abundance somewhere a lot cheaper, I'll take a doz, maybe more! I know what I can sell them for at gun shows! 88's were my Fav lever actions in that style too, at one time, untill I discovered the Sako Finnwolf! After that, all my 88's flocked off to new homes, right after that long legged fair haired Finnland gal arrived! If you get someone that tell's you she's just a glorified Win 88, that's when you can tell he/she's blowing smoke out de ass and is brain hurt'n!! There really is no apples to apples comparison in the two!

well, layed not, boo-who!!! Soon time for it!!! Snow held up, yeah a wee bit! Went hunt'n, oldest son got a spiker buck last day of muzzel and young Jr got a 4 pointer today with his new X-Bolt in 7mm-08! Head shot. Now lets see you do that with your new BLR!!! Wez eat'n quick fry venison, hot cast iron pan, butter for lube, salt & pepper for flavour, yum yum yum! :D
 
They seem to come up less these days but are available, Id agree with what everyone is saying 500-650 is what you'd seem to expect to pay these days. Original magazines are getting harder to find but I usually see them for $80-$85. Make sure they are 88 mags as the 100 follower is different, its designed to lock the bolt to the rear on the 100.
 
$600 for a "perfect pre-64" is low in my opinion. Although it's not a rare gun, it's getting harder and harder to find excellent condition all-original pre-64s. They don't come up all that often.

a friend in the Okanogan had one in .243 and we used to shoot yellow belly marmots with it. Would reliably shoot into .75 inch groups at 100 yards, and took a lot of marmots out to 400...if you have one and are selling it, and if in good shape a really serious try at shooting it before letting one go is in order
