So today my father in law gave me his winchester 30-30 to clean up and test fire. The action is rusted shut and the barrel is plugged with conwebs from sitting in a closet for 30 years. I have no experience with lever guns and im not sure where to start on this one.

Remove the wood and soak it in WD-40, or Ed's Red or something similar. It should free up the action. Then use some extra fine steel wool & oil to remove exterior rust and clean the bore.

This was rusted shut when I got it. I used generous applications of Fluid Film to get it to open up, then took it apart and soaked all the parts in varsol and kerosene.

You might try spraying carb cleaner into it too.

Alright a bit of a update, i got the action open after a bit of lube and some elbow grease. Funny thing is I got a empty case in the eye, I fogot those old 94s ejected straigt up! Anyway ill go at the metal with steel wool tomorrow before work. I will make sure to post pics when im done!

Don't forget, very very fine steel wool combined with oil!

That poor old Winchester forgot what the heck it was after all those years
stuck in the closet.
It rusted itself into a Marlin by yump'in yimmeny......... :p

Of course that's a marlin. Pay attention to the posts, that is not the OP's gun. Just a different example by another poster. No one ever claimed it was a winchester.

There is probably an " Coming out of the closet" joke here but I'm not going to bother...
BTW good luck with the Carbine / Rifle, which is it anyhow? A rifle would most definitely be a score; more so than a carbine, IMO
