My father's winchester has really tall rear sights compared to other Winchester 94's I've seen. His serial number puts the DOM at about 1971.

I'll post pictures of the sights when I get home but I don't have another 94 to compare them to.

They are tall (when compared to a friend's 94 they were about twice as tall) and have a white diamond in the middle.

How high is the front sight? Sounds like an after market sight, not original. Maybe somebody changed both to get it to shoot properly. Is there a problem with the rifle?

The front sight is normal sized, the rear sight is tall but has a really deep groove.

My father bought the rifle brand new so the sights were like that straight from the store. He picked it up in the early 70's from a place in Quesnel, BC.

Never been a single problem with the rifle at all except losing the hood for the front sight one year hunting.

I was just going to say, it sounds like a full buckhorn.
Those horns up the side of a buckhorn serve no purpose, whatsoever, in sighting the rifle. They are nothing but a hindrance, because they block so much of your view.
If the rifle were mine, I would remove the sight, saw off the horns, file and reblue my cut surface, then replace the sight.

Well then it's a good thing Im not you :p

That rifle has taken many deer over the years without a single problem to gun or user and even after the rifle is passed onto me it will stay like it is until I pass it onto my heir. :D

OK, I didn't know nostalgia was involved.
As far as shooting is concerned, it would be much better without the horns on the buckhorn sight.
