Winchester 94 vs Marlin 336

What are the prices we're looking at for pre-65 Winchester 94 and pre-crossbolt safety Marlin 336?

Roughly the same +/- $100. Pre 64 win's cost a little more than pre CBS marlins it seems though, but i think it is because when winchester stopped making the 94 the price on used ones went up and stayed up. I bought a nice old 336 RC on the EE for $300. you wont find a nice pre 64 win for that unless it's a bit beat up.

I also think the rough action on newer marlins is because they are... well, new. It seems anything made in the last few years is dodgy, and i bet it would be the same situation for a new win 94 if they were still being produced. Oh wait... they started getting crappy in 1964, right... i forgot about that.

Im waiting for delivery of an early 50s Marlin in 35 Rem. They are a bit heavier yes but then they are tougher mechs and will take much heavier cals than 30-30. I like Winchesters, dont get me wrong, but Im not buying another 30-30 and Marlin has so much more to offer. Besides its actually designed to be cleaned from the chamber unlike the Winchester and is side eject so it takes a scope well......and after all that I like curved pistol grips. There are lots of Marlins out there but never many for sale. I think that says a bunch too.

If you want accuracy, get a bolt. If you want cool, go lever. I hunt bush with a mint Win94 made in'57, it is slick and nice. My friend has a new Marlin SS Lam, way slicker action. We both eat well.

I quite like the look of the Henry H009 myself. Having tried a Winchester and Marlin, that might be the next one.

if you want both, get a savage 99 - i should have thought was obvious, given your moniker

Back in the sixties, My Dad and Uncle were having a friendly shooting contest, my Dad had the Win 94 and my Uncle had the Marlin, Both Were fairly accurate, about 75 yards, BUT the odd thing was from the Win 94 there were holes in the paper, the Marlin had tears, (means the bullet was tumbling), Don't know if any of the other oldtimers noticed this or not? P.S My Dad won the contest lol

I actually had a Marlin 30-30 new, and completely dumped it for a 30 year old Win94TE. That thing had a square lever, jammed like crazy, and felt like I was handling a dollar store plastic gun. I sold the stupid thing and bought the Winchester, which put $200 back in my pocket. I spent $160 on 200 rounds of ammo, and then $40.00 for a set of dies.

I'm now 400 rounds into my used model 94 and haven't looked back. Never, ever, would I touch another new Marlin. The one I had was jam-o-matic, fugly, and just didn't feel like a manly rifle.

go with the pre 64 the marlins are absolute junk unless you get an older one you mentioned the winnie you have been carrying around is a great fit for you that tells me thats the one for you

I love the 94, perfect fit/feel/balance etc as has been said. I have a bunch of pre '64 in my collection. I only ever tried one Marlin a 30AS I believe it was. Didn't like it at all, heavier, not the same feel, not even close. And no where near as purdy! Go 94, especially since you are already in love with them! ;)

Hunted for a season back in my teens with a '94 Win. 30-30 with Williams peep-sights. Nice gun, no kicks.

Currently own a Marlin 336 30-30, about 12 years old, and IMHO there's no comparison. Better finished, much stronger action, and is a joy to carry. Plus, if you like a scope, it's a no-brainer.

And given how LeverEvolution has turned this puppy into a legit 250 yd rifle, a scope is perfectly at home atop my Marlin. Shoots 1" to 1.5" groups @ 100 yds, too!

For those over fifty or with horrible eyes, you could also peep sight the 94's.
Much better.................

A Williams Peep with Firesight front post is amazing on my Win 94.....just love it. It keeps the traditional handling, feel and looks of the Win 94, but provides a great sighting system........and I am still far from 50 years old lol

I'm sure that's a very nice practical set-up, but to me scoping a levergun is heresy, so the ability to mount a scope is a non-issue.
