I have a Norinco jw-21 lever action 22 with a broken firing pin striker and can't find a replacement. I have been told that the JW-21 is a direct copy of a 9422, looking at the parts diagrams online, the parts look the same but I have no way of knowing for sure. Just wondering, has anyone really compared the two? I have also thought of making the striker, looks pretty simple but not sure what kind/grade of metal to use. Ideas anyone?

You asked for ideas - I had considered to make a firing pin for a rifle once - seemed the shaping of it was pretty straight forward - then I got lost in the heat treat requirements that I found on-line. I did receive an elder Stevens Favourite rifle, chambered for .22 Long Rifle. The firing pin that was in that breech block fell out in two pieces - appeared to have been fashioned from a nail or something - I ended up to buy a "reproduction" from Numrich for it - the part that showed up was a one piece firing pin. I am sure that a home made thing would last for some number of firings, but I think they needed to be correctly heat treated for them to last - that was "over my head" to do.

For $13 for one, does not seem that you would have a lot to loose if the shape or size is too different to use? You will know what you bought - likely easy enough to pass along to someone who needs one?

I just bought a couple spare 9422's firing pins from the E.E. he still has more available... can you post a picture of your broken firing pin

I have already contacted him, waiting for a reply. It is not the firing pin that is broken, it's the striker behind the pin, in the back half of the bolt. Might be easy to shape but as Potashminer said, getting the proper hardness/heat treatment would be the difficult part. Also seems like the hammer spring is much stiffer than it needs to be.

Got a striker on the way, hoping it fits. Next question is how to lighten the hammer spring, hammer seems really stiff and that may be what is making the lever so hard to cycle.

Let us know how it goes Gerard, I didn't realize it was a 2 part system with a striker between the hammer and the firing pin.

All Done!!! got the striker for a 9422 today, perfect fit, fires perfect. Lightened the hammer spring by taking a couple of coils off and filed a bunch off the top of the hammer where the bolt slides over it. Action is still stiff but not nearly as bad as it was.

Nice!
Put on some gloves and kick back with some classic western movies cycling the action on the couch to help smooth it out.... :)
