I recently acquired a Mdl. 97 military (ordnance mark; handguard) that appears to be a takedown. The magazine cap is different from the civilian model (to support the bayonet), and doesn't have the pin you push through to be able to rotate the mag/bbl. to disassemble. It looks like the pin should be there. Can anyone tell me if there should be a pin, or does the military gun not come apart like the civilian takedown guns.

I think the military 97's in later years were take downs. To enable the gun to have a bayonet mounted the tube pin and cap were removed and the bayonet lug attached. The gun will still take down but will likely require the removal of the bayonet lug attachment.

cheers Darryl

You have to remove the bayonet lug and heat shield assembly first, I used a pin punch to rotate the mag tube. You have to completely remove the bayonet lug screws as they sit in grooves cut in the barrel.

Darryl -
Thanks. I got off the heat shield. I'll use something to turn the bbl/mag as you suggest.

Here's a couple of shots of my 1897 Trenchgun. This one's an earlier non-takedown version:

I've got a '42 takedown trenchgun, and I've never been able to figure out how to take it down! I can get the heatshield and mag tube off, but the barrel continues to stump me...any help?

Nice winnie by the way! What year is yours? Also, does anyone know what Century was selling the Vietnam imports for when they brought them in years ago?

I have one that was made in 1916 and it is a solid frame of which I was told is rare to find now. Looks a lot like MTF's beauty. I don't even know what they are worth now. I paid $420.00 for it 5 yrs ago. Shooting it is a gas !! I've shot a buddies Norenco and it is junk compared to mine.
