winchester 97

Does it have heavy rust, a bent barrel, and a cracked stock? Probably a lot less than if is as new, with the factory hang tags still on it.

There is no answer to your question. With a detailed description and perhaps photos, you might get some useful suggestions.

Do you know the year?? Is it an actual Winchester?? Does it look like somebody tried to do some work refinishing it?? If someone did a shotty job (ha no pun intended) re blueing it or something it would probably bring the value down.

Also what are you planning on doing with it?? I know that sounds dumb but i can't speak for the 16ga, but i have a really old Model 1897 12ga. I can't shoot steel, only lead. I can't run 2 3/4" shells in it, i need 2 1/2" (if i want to be safe and not ruin my gun eventually). 2 1/2" 12ga shells are fun to find trust me!!

Basically if you are getting it to shoot a bunch of clays or whatever with your buddies and if its gonna be your only shotgun and you just want it for shooting it might not be what ya want anyway. Maybe check the age and what shells you can use, alot of the 97 are 2 3/4" i think. I guess i'm thinking 12ga too, not 16ga!! 16ga might even be more scarce or expensive to find!

I'm not trying to scare you away, i love mine it's great!! Maybe just take into consideration why you want it or how it's going to fit into your gun collection etc. If you want it to shoot a bit and add to collection it's a sweet gun!! But as i said as cool as mine is it barely gets to see the range, when we can pick up a value pack of cheap target 2 3/4" loads for a 3rd of the price of the 2 1/2" (when i can find them) and take my buddies $150 side by side and blast away all day. And maybe yours will blast common shells too, but find out 1st if you wanna shoot it lots.

Hope this maybe helped?? Ha sorry didn't mean to get off topic and go preacher on you lol. I guess you were only asking value! Whats the sellers price anyway??

Also mines a 12ga model 1897 Winchester form 190* something. Maybe 1906? Anyway its in okay condition, never been redone or worked on too much, okay shape basically. A few people have said its worth ballpark $300 or so, probably to a cowboy action shooter. Dunno how accurate that is, just what a few people said. And thats 12ga, maybe 16ga is completely different. Anyway maybe this post leans more towards you helping you answer your question lol. Good luck........

I'd say $300 tops maybe less, Struff55 is kinda Winchester pump expert and may know if 16 ga. raises or lowers the value, there's alot of those out there, bein' shortened for Cowboy Action (12. Ga.)

depending on condition from as low as $200 to $1000 for plain field grade. Like the others said you can't shoot steel but fine to hunting upland game with. I just bought a 12gauge Win 97 made in 1955!! in almost perfect shape 88%+. I payed around when all said and done $1000, as I have seen lots of 97's and there ussually beat to hell, so sometimes you have to pay to get what you want, cheers Dale in T-Bay

You don't need photos to value a shooter if the condition is 80% plus on a field grade $400-$500 as the condition deteriorates so will the value. If it is one with a short chamber then you have to find some one with a 2 3/4'' chamber reamer that will cost about $85 not a big job I have done many 97's and model 12's but still an added cost the 97 16ga. is built on the 12ga frame all 12 ga parts interchange except the ejector if you need one very difficult to find if not impossible all in all a fun gun I have two and shoot them all the time.

Once you get your hands on a 97 you turn back time and feel like a kid with a brand new toy! There great and alot of fun!! Always fun to fix up and old 97 or model 12, have fun and don't let anyone tell you there obsolete! There absolutely great and you will have fun hunting upland game for sure! cheers my friend Dale in T-Bay
