Let's see your Black Talon Ammo! Show us what you got!

Originally started this thread to see if Black Talon Ammo was legal in Canada. Now its been a few years and I was able to find some 10mm and have seen various collections for sale on the EE. For anyone who is collecting or has a collection let's see some pics and keep this thread alive! Thanks for all your posts past and present!

For rifle ammo black talon had it's name changed to failsafe, neither was banned. Not sure about the handgun version.

Ok cool. I was watching ballistic gel testing of various handgun ammo and the Ranger SXT has the same "Talons" when expanded as the Black Talon did. Thanks for the replies!

It was available here in Canada, from time to time you see a few boxes of Black Talon's show up on the EE, they usually don't last long.

They rebranded it to Ranger SXT, they banned it in some states, I remember reading at the time and there may have been a 60 minutes episode on it. It was quite popular with the gang bangers, the reason they were able to get the support to Ban it was they were able to get the medical proffessionals on their side, this was when the AIDS epedemic was in full stride early to mid 90s. Emergency room workers, where the shot gang bangers were brought to were terrified that the sharp talons would puncture their gloves while attempting to dig slugs out of people thus exposing them to HIV.

It was also said that a lot of people used to call it and ask for it as "black felon ammo" especially by some police forces too, which did not go down well when the media started to report that.

I have a couple of boxes of each of the Winchester Ranger and the old school original Black Talons. I put a box of Talons through my Beretta, Glock and BRS-99 to see how they would cycle a couple years ago. All 3 firearms ate up everything no problem.

Just curious if anyone knows if the Winchester Black Talon Ammo was ever prohibited in Canada? Have a debate going with a buddy and he seems to think it was. Under the prohibited ammo in Canada list to me this wouldn't have been the case and as we all know the Winchester ranger SXT is the "Same Xact Thing" as the Black Talon minus the black lubalox coating. looking for other input as I can't seem to find anyone else who may know.
I have a few boxes of SXT 9mm 147gn. Some have the black Lubox coating, some are a gold colour. Awesome ammo! Hoping a coyote will present itself when I have my BRS99 on me.

I can see Black Talons, Hydra-Shoks and Silvertips etc. being legal as they are all essentially HP ammo. But what about the fragmentable or multi projectile stuff like Mag Safe or Glaser Safety Slugs? I've never seen them here. Are they legal in Canada?

Winchester caved to hype over the name, and simply ending up changing it. There was lots of media hype at the time about them.
As for Glaser, you used to be able to buy the 6 round blister packs, but they were obscenly expensive back in the day.

Awesome lots of good info! Thanks guys! I was aware of the fiasco down in the states with the medical professionals being concerned, but it was never proven that anyone has gloves torn or cuts from that particular ammo. Most any expanding bullets have sharp edges on them once expanded anyway, gotta love the media hype.

At one point several years ago hollow point handgun ammunition was banned from importation by Explosives Canada. Only the importation was effected as possession was legal. To get around these regulations the ammo companies packaged it in 20 round boxes and marked it for use in rifles and this made the Feds happy as long as they thought it was for lever actions, bolt actions and a few semi auto rifles that were chambered in pistol calibers. Eventually the Feds realized the failure of these regulations and removed them years ago. Yes Black Talon was rebranded Ranger XST in response to media outrage. I bought the last cases of Black Talon that were available and they sold like hot cakes. Phil.
