Winchester Black Talon Ammo

My recollection is same as P&D above.
The border customs guys regarded HP handgun ammo as "explosive", so wouldnt allow it in.
But it was not banned by name.

Ah yes remember the whole media "cop killers" bullets. The stories behind OMG its got a Teflon coating to go thru body armor. I thought they looked cool.

At one point several years ago hollow point handgun ammunition was banned from importation by Explosives Canada. Only the importation was effected as possession was legal. To get around these regulations the ammo companies packaged it in 20 round boxes and marked it for use in rifles and this made the Feds happy as long as they thought it was for lever actions, bolt actions and a few semi auto rifles that were chambered in pistol calibers. Eventually the Feds realized the failure of these regulations and removed them years ago. Yes Black Talon was rebranded Ranger XST in response to media outrage. I bought the last cases of Black Talon that were available and they sold like hot cakes. Phil.

Thanks for the info Phil!

Are you talking about the green tipped conical rounds. I think they were called Arcane or something like that.

There were all kinds of different bullets available. The stuff that is for sure prohibited is the THV machined copper bullets, but there are a number of different designs and loads that will penetrate kevlar regardless of wether they were actually designed to or not. A few years ago I got hold of an ex-RCMP issue level 2A vest and tried a bunch of different stuff against it. Was kind of interesting to see what would penetrate and what wouldn't. Basically it boils down to velocity and bullet shape. Typically anything hollow point would not penetrate at all, which makes sense because those are designed to expand rapidly. Penetration followed by reliable expansion is a very difficult trick to pull off.

If anyone can put hands on any exotic 9mm bullets, I still have a panel from the vest we could try it on.

13 yo me shot my first deer with 180gr black talons in a .308 win. Overkill but worked. Can still picture the blood pumping out of the softball sized exit hole.

I still have a box of that 308 left. Great ammo. Used to use the 230 gr in .338 WinMag for moose hunting.....sure wish they still made it. My Sako loved it.

Thanks for the pics! Great to see that some of this ammo is still out there. Since i started this thread I too was able to find some Black Talon's as well. I got my hands on a box of 10mm in great shape! Cost me a small fortune to acquire, but it was worth it! lol IMG_5368.jpg

The Black Talon pistol ammo is hard enough to find in popular calibers but in 10mm it’s a Unicorn! Nice score.

Way back in the day, I bought a case of the 9mm 147gr (10 boxes of 20 in a case) and foolishly shot most of it at the range one day. I did hang on to these last four boxes .......now just for lookin’ at in the gun room.
