I was under the impression that Winchester shot guns were now made by browning. Does any one know if this is true or are they just owned by the same company? Also how does the quality of the SX3 compare to a maxus?

Herstal Group (AKA Fabrique Nationale or simply "FN") owns both the Browning Arms Company and the US Repeating Arms Company (holder of the Winchester trade mark). So, yes Browning and Winchester arms are made by the same people.

That being said, most firearms manufacturers produce products for a variety of market segments. Herstal operates in the same manner by building guns for value shoppers right up to those who can appreciate and afford high-end products. While there's quite a bit of overlap, it is my opinion that Browning guns target a marginally higher-priced segment than the Winchester-branded products.

Herstal no doubt seeks to take advantage of any economies they can muster. Some parts are almost certainly produced in the same facilities for both brands. Without any specific knowledge of their setup, I'd bet that Brownings and Winchesters are assembled in different facilities but they both have access to the same materials and technologies from the Herstal Group of companies. Either brand can produce higher quality products than the other, but it all depends on the price point and market segment they target with a given model.

I haven't handled current builds of the models you inquire about. So, I'll leave the comparison of those 2 models to those who have.
 
Quality between the SX3 and Maxus is on even par build wise. Both guns are Duratouch'd in camo and synthetic models.

But both guns use different in how the handle. You'd have to pick them both up and fondle for a bit.

I have the SX3 but I picked up a maxus and loved it maybe even better than my SX3 as it fit me better without adding any stock shims.

Maxus has the magazine stop, SX3 does not.
Vent rib on the Maxus is not as wide as the one on the SX3.
Maxus is on a totally different gas system too.

The original Wincheser 101 was made in Japan. The Belgium made 101 is a different gun and the only thing they share is the name.

I have not shot a maxus yet, buts know quite a few who own the SX3. All of those that I have shot preformed without a glitch. If the fit is right, I do not think that one can go too far wrong. Nice gun!
 
one present example of what is going on with them is the 1885 and b78 rifles.
The "new" B78 uses the 1885 action, only differences are stocks, calibers and barrel style,round vs octagon, and sights, Win is irons and flipups and "antique" calibers, Browning is now all scoped and modern calibers.
