winchester fail safe ?

Yup Winchester is discontinuing the "Failsafe" ... many writers and professionals considered the failsafe a very poor bullet design and would not even write about it.
They are replacing it with a new bullet called the XP3... with some surprising similarities to the X-Bullet.

Failsafe

Hey J,

We've used Failsafe with good results but there's no real advantage. On Whitetails we use 165 g. and just use Winchesters' regular factory loads like ballistic silvertip. We like the 180 gr Failsafe or similar for Moose. My favourite so far is 132 gr handloaded partitions in .270 for deer.

I used a failsafe on a blackbear this spring. It preformed well. 160 grain out of my 7wsm at around 3000 fps. The shot was at very close range and had no exit, perfect bullet expansion stopping in the far side of the hide. While I had a good preformance from this bullet, I've heard enough negative publicity on them I have now switched to 160 grain accubonds.

I think a lot of the reported failures were probably in slower calibres or longer ranges.

maybe like the day I slammed two black bears at 25 & 8 yards with 160 gr. Fail Safes out of my 26" barreled 7mm Rem Mag??

ON the other side of the coin, I slammed 2 deer at the basically the same distance, both in the lungs,and both had baseball sized exit wounds with blood on trees 10 feet up in the air. Neither went more than 20 yards. (the doe in a circle around me) But I havent used them on bears, so I couldnt tell you, but I have used em on boars. Here is an entrance and exit on one of my boars. Neck shot that broke the spine fairly close. The boar only wiggled, but didnt go a step farther.

I killed a moose this year with my BLR in .270 WSM using a 140 grain fail safe, at 75 yards one shot in the front end it went don on the spot. I was impressed with the fail safe.
