I am starting to look around for a Winchester Heavy Duck, what should I be looking for and how much should I be paying. I am hoping to pick-up two and have one tapped for flush fitting chokes, unless that is a travesty in which case I will buy one and burden myself ;) with Bismuth or Nice shot. I know a reasonable amount about more run of the mill Model 12's but the Heavy Duck and the Skeet Guns are still revealing their Mysteries to me.

Still not ready to buy one, just starting to look so please don't PM me trying to sell me the Heavy Duck gun Olin Winchester owned personally please.

There is a nice one on EE solid rib 30'' BBl good price well under $500.00 I have one with a solid rib I cut it back to 27'' and installed chokes handles very nice I could not decide between 26''or 28'' so I compromised 27'' .They are a little on the heavy side I took the lead out of the butt stock and that helped the balance As far as condition the only thing to watch for is if the action lock has wear hold the trigger down and close the action it should not fire until the bolt has completely engaged in the bolt cutaway . also when dry fired you should have to pull forward on the action arm to unlock the bolt. They are awesome shotguns and my addiction

Were the Heavy Duck Guns available with 32 inch barrels? I have been told and read both yes and no.

My Master plan is to pick up a 32inch Win 12 and have it choked and have some modest bore work done.

Yes there were 32" Heavy Duck Guns. But most were 30"

The fellow that has the 2 model 12's listed on EE is a great fellow to deal with. I have purchased many firearms from him. I also know the 30" ribbed model 12 he has is a pretty nice gun. I can't speak for the 32" one but either way they are listed for a lot less than what they typically sell for in the US.

At this time the U.S market does not dictate price for any market place cars, vintage guitars ,two cylinder John Deer tractors all the baby boomer toys are not worth much.On Barrett Jackson auction the other day 1968 Fire bird 400 beautifully restored all numbers matched $12,800.00 what a deal. *yrs ago they were $30,000-$40.000I have bought and sold many vintage guitars over the yrs another example 10 yrs ago 1959 Fender Stratocaster $20,000 I have seen them for $8,900 buy it now with no action. I do follow market trends for collectibles and at this time it is very soft.

The Heavy Duck (as with all models 12) have very steep forcing cones. May be an issue with steel larger than #2. Shotgun guru Don ZUTZ reported that he had used a Heavy duck factory choked full for a season or two with #2 and #3 steel with no effect on the choke. The heavy walled barrel seemed to handle it without issue. Patterns reported to be good by ZUTZ also. I would recommend finding one with the longer fore end. (not the flat bottom) The gun gets hard to reach with the short fore end. Just my two cents.

Found the 3 inch "Heavy Duck" M12's to not be as smooth in relation to the action when compared to the standard M12. Spent cases had the tendancy to hang up upon ejection with mine. Years ago Imperial CIL used to make 3 inch ammo with a rolled crimp and plastic over shot card. Those functioned flawlessly in my duck.

Back "in the Day" a lot of Heavy Ducks were converted to Trap guns. As the HD is Heavier than the Model 12 Trap and were better at soaking up recoil. Not to mention melting targets from the parking lot.
