I was wondering where I could get some information on a model 70 I have. Is there a place/organisation where I can send the serial number? I have never seen one like this, and would like to see if its a custom shop gun.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Well tell us all about it, perhaps some one here can assist you. FS

Sorry about the pic quality. One day I will figure it out. Serial # is in the G99###'s. I bought it with the Redfield one piece base and rings. As well as the Kahles 1.5-4.5 Helia Super.

The only Guess I have is that either the stock has been replaced, reworked(checkered).
It is a nice piece of wood but the checkering doesn't look like anything out of the custom shop. Rest of the gun is plain old push feed Winchester (one of my favourites). Though the profile and basic look is certainly all Winchester except for the grip cap.

Ok thanks, I was told by a fellow that the checkering is hand done. None of the lines are symmetrical. And the oak leaves were a Winchester "thing" of that time.

Push feeds are Post '64 right?

I don't think it's a custom shop rifle. The early post-64 M70s had pressed checkering because it was cheaper to make. Winchester went back to cut checkering sometime in the 1970s.

I would suggest that someone customized the stock, doubt very much that Winchester had anything to do with it.

I tend to agree, Winchester used press checkering in those years, but clearly the diamonds are in relief, and I don't recall Winchester ever putting a hook on a pistol grip cap. All M-70 magnums brought out during the late 60s early 70s had a ventilated recoil pad if memory serves.

It looks like a combination of impressed and cut or possibly impressed and overcut panels. Rather poorly done either way. I would not attach any special value to them in any event. They have the look of a Fajen stock and Winchester used some Fajen stocks at about the time Fajen went down if memory serves.

I think you are absolutely right. Here a picture of a model 88 from the 70's with the winchester oak leaves press checkering ( basket style)

Looks like a stock of of a Ted Williams model that Winchester marketed through Sears .

+1 for that vote. I have a 300 win mag with a S/N not far from yours - nearly identical stock....mine was made in 1968. From what I am aware of, if the SN is over 700000 it's a post-64 FOR SURE. Some were junk and some were real shooters. Mine was "okay" until I had it glass bedded - now it shoots like crazy!
