The .308 is relatively common in the later model (post 1960) Savage model 99s. They're less desirable to collectors, especially the ones with detachable magazines. The detachable magazine would be a plus for carry on a tractor or ATV where you need to keep it unloaded.
I got a really nice score on a 99C in .308 recently and it's a great shooter.
Marlin's and Winchesters are both great guns though. The Marlin is easier to strip the bolt and clean from the breech if that matters to you.
