Hey, folks.

Dad's had a Model 69 Winchester for longer than he's had me, and I'm 46 years old. This is the rifle I grew up shooting. The one thing I don't like about it is the rear sight. It's a big-arsed buckhorn, located close to the eye. The older I get, the more uncomfortable it becomes to use.

Winchester offered a factory peep with these rifles that looked like this:

Does anyone know about these? Are they any good? Any fragility issues I should be aware of? Any idea where an enterprising guy might get one?

Thanks,

Dan

The picture of the sight you posted is for the Winchester models 67 and 68, if you put it on your Dads model 69 Win I think it would be way to far forward to be comfortable for your eye to pick up? It may work but the Win 67/68 action is very short compared to the Win 69, Lyman,Marbles, redfield all made a reciever peep for this gun, the most popular here in Canada would be to find a Lyman 57 series peep. If the distance from the dovetail to your eye is OK on your model 69 Skinner makes a great product! If you need any further help, please PM me here, cheers dale Z!

Dan, I have one but it is attached to the gun still. Not sure if you are after a donor gun or not but I bet you could talk my wife into letting it go, it was her Grampa's but he had a 68 as well.
Give us a shout if interested.

Hi, Noel.

That's a helluva offer, bud, but more than we need. I would very much appreciate a picture of the sight, though. I always figured the dovetail behind the bolt handle was a goofy place, but it makes a lot of sense with a peep.

It is identical to the pic you posted, complete with the US patent pend. Don't know that the bluing is OEM anymore.

*EDIT I have boo boo'd, the rifle with that peep sight is either a 67 or 68 and NOT a 69. Did not realize there ever was a 69!

Is the 22 a 69A or a 69? The peep from Winchester that mounts near the back of the receiver is an 80A. If your rifle was fitted for this peep there will be a notch removed from the back of the stock, near the rear of the receiver.
I have one that I no longer use. FS

Hey, FS.

Thanks for the offer. Dad's rifle is a 69. From what I can tell, the 69A used the 80A receiver sight (requiring a chunk out of the stock to fit) but the 69 used a sight that mounted atop the receiver using the existing dovetail.

Further research indicates that the sight came in a shorter and longer version, with the shorter not having the "point" at the front so as to avoid interfering with the ejection port. Noel, I assume if you have a M68, yours has a point at the front of it, like so?

These sights appear to be pretty rare. I'd like to keep this old rifle as stock as possible, so while the Skinner sight is a possibility (thanks, Candown) it's not quite what I'm going for. Yet.
