Got a chance to take my M70 .264 out to the range today and tested some Berger bullets. Looking promising.

Nice shootin' :) My BIL and his brother both bought .264 Westerner's back when they first hit BC dealers shelves around 1960 or '61. The BIL topped his .264 with a Redfield Accutrak 3-9 Rangefinder scope and many moose, bear, deer and coyotes bit the dust to that pair of rifles over the past half century

A very interesting cartridge the 264 WM.

I've always been interested in getting one, but I've read quite a bit about how, as originally introduced, rifles for this cartridge had short throats that meant bullets needed to be seated fairly deep in the case (unless you got your rifle worked on), and also, how the factory ammo was loaded with double-diameter bullets, or some such thing, and the cartridge wasn't really meant for "normal" .264 bullets. Lots of this stuff seems pretty implausible to me....

Is this a bunch of baloney, or is it all in the past, or what's the deal? There seems to be lots of myth around this cartridge...I'd like to get a 264 WM, but I'd want to be shooting 140's (like Bergers or something) seated way out there, so I could load it right to the max.

A 140 at 3200 is seriously flat shooting, and with a good 264 is easily do-able. The 6.5 140s are magic in themselves,as in .500+ to .595 BC.I have a 264 and have learned a couple of things about them. They can be spikey and slow. The short factory throating is to blame for a lot of the spikeyness, certainly with the too fast a powder. 4831 is a fast powder for this cartridge. A slow barrel just has to be rebarreled.A 264 to do it's thing, has to be both fast and accurate. The new super slow powders really make it shine.

I have found that the now discontinued H870 was the best powder for speed & accuracy in the two 264 WM I had. 3200 + FPS in both my 25.5" Shilen & 26" Gaillard ;)

RL25 was very good at 64gr, but only gave me speeds of around 3125 FPS
Retumbo did not group well for me with the little testing I did. It was low 3100's also
US869 & AA8700 were very similar, but topped out right around 3100 FPS.

Powders I'd like to try are 50BMG & the new RL50

Have heard good things about H1000 & IMR7828 but have not tested myself.

264 WM can be very picky to load for, but once the magic # is found it is very accurate & very fast.

I will be trying some 7828 and do more testing with H1000. Next up is the 130gr Accubond and 120gr TSX. Might pick up some E-Tips too.

Nice Glad to see people trying out other bullets aside from the 140's in these things. You should take a look at the new 123gr A-Max .512 BC and the speed you could get out of that bullet would out preform a .595 BC 140gr all day long.

I have some 129gr IB's, 129gr SST's, 120gr BT's waiting on 130gr Accubonds my rifle is more for hunting then target shooting so no VLD's or A-Max's for me. Powders will be Retumbo, 4831, RL25, 7828ssc and 7828......

My load was always a 140 gr bullet, until I filled the case with H4350 and stuck a 120 gr TSX in it!

That old westerner shoots liek a house on fire.

I will have to try them. Got two boxes, so will give them a go. I am not stuck on 140gr, just wanted to see how they shot. Heck, even the 120gr has a decent BC. Whichever shoots the best will get the nod.

My go to load for my Westerner is H1000 with the 140 SBT Sierra loaded to 3200 avg fps, took moose with it, IMR7828 also worked well,
I would like to try some of the newer slow burners for kicks.

I have owned several 264 Win Mags over the years.
Couple of them were custom guns, 3 were factory offerings from Winchester and Remington.

In a 26" barrel, I expected to get 3200+ with 140's and [now obsolete] H5010 or H570.
Later powders that worked well for me are Vihtavuori N570 and Retumbo.
Norma MRP-2 showed promise, but has been difficult to find.

I would like to try Reloder 33 and 50 in the 264.

One Pac-Nor super match barrel made 3300 with the 140 Partition and H5010
That rifle was throated so the 140 Partition could be seated with it's base even with the neck/shoulder junction.

This is a very flat shooting number, and hits with authority, even way out there.

Regards, Eagleye

My current 264, a 77 Hawkeye stainless is short-throated and I think thats a handicap...

I dont' know why they do that. I had a Post 64 264WM like that. The only way to see bullets out would be to buy Winchester PP's or Remington Core Lock's which had the dual diameter. Other wise I was seating deeply and pressure built up faster because of my compressed loads.
