Pre '64 Mod.70 - .300H&H
I have the same gun and it's a keeper. The sub MOA groups do happen. But what really is nice is the groups are very consistent right out to 300 meters. A few years ago I showed up at a shoot with the old girl and held my own with this rifle. Basically the shoot was legal 'hunting' caliber only, no heavy barrels and combined scope/rifle weight of under 10lbs. I knew it was capable of good groups at 200/300 meters, but had no idea how it compared to everyone else's hunting rifles. It pulled ahead where it really mattered - 1.39" 5 shot group @ 300 meters! The best I've done with a hunting rifle on paper @ 300m. My .300H&H likes Sierra MatchKing 200 gr. bullets with 64 grs. of IMR 4350. Have worked up loads as well using 180 & 190's and tried IMR 4831 as well as several other varietys of powders and it doesn't really matter - it just shoots awesome whatever loads that I've fed it so far (have Berger 210's to try). Now there is some recoil with her (my loads/heavy bullets, poor recoil pad), so each time I take her out I tell myself it's o.k. a little recoil is just a reminder that I am shooting a real legend and it's worth every bruise. My fifty+ yr. old gun is all original and looks as good as yours !!
