I've been looking at getting a new big game rifle for some time now, and I have narrowed it down to a Winchester M70 Extreme Weather SS, I was thinking of getting it in the 7mm RM but didn't really want a 26" barrel. I see now that they are offering it with the 7WSM now with a 24" barrel.
So my question is, I know they are pretty much the same round just long vs. short action, but I have heard about the short mags having problems feeding, just was wonding if anyone knows of the problems or if anyone has a M70 in a WSM version that has had a problem in anyway with the M70.
Thanks
Ron

If your a hand loader flip a coin if you shoot factory ammo get the rem mag.

x2 same/same, but factory ammo is scarce for the wsm. You could slways have an inch or 2 cut from the longer barrel for $50. I wouldn't let the 26" bother me none.

No feeding issues in any of the WSM's I've used. Apparently when they fist came out a few rifles had issues, but that was a decade ago.

Identical performance, so it's up to you. :)

I'd go with the WSM...I don't think you can cut 2" off the 7 Rem Mag barrel without running into the flutes...or, if you're worried about feeding with the WSM....just get a 270....

Buy at least 200 brass cases of 7 WSM if you choose 7 WSM!
270 WSM basically killed 7 WSM and even if it is better than 270 WSM, it's dead. So my advice is :
  • 270 WSM if you reload
  • 7 Rem Mag if you don't
  • consider both 270 Win and 280 Win

Magnum are great but 270/280 and 30-06 are more practical.

If you want an Extreme Weather SS M70 in 7WSM and know where there is one I'd grab it.

7WSM is listed on the Winchester website but not in the 2012 catalogue.

Might turn out to be an easy decision.

Thanks for the info guys, and I did take a look at the 2012 catalog today, and your right Sask it's not listed. Well I guess I'm going for the 7mm RM or unless I come across a used 7 WSM.

I heard it was the WSSM that had problems and not the WSM. My brother has a .270WSM. Its not actually that much better than a .270win though. My factory Hornady Super Performance 130gr load is 3190fps well his Federal Gold 130gr load is 3300 or something close to that. He never shoots it since the ammo is so dam expensive. Its a problem if you can't practice enough for hunting season because the ammo cost is to much.

It would appear that the WSM is headed for obsolescence, so you will need to be a reloader to capitalize on it's potential in the future.
That being said, I own a 7SAUM, which is much deader, but have brass laid in, so no issue.
No feeding problems in newer offerings.
7mm Rem Mag much easier to find ammo for everywhere.
Handloading potential of the 7mm RM is slightly better. [more capacity]
This is not reflected in most factory loads.
Factory ammo prices are obscene for the WSM compared to the 7mm RM.
In the end, you must decide which makes more sense for you.
Regards, Eagleye.
