I picked up a unfired 1982 M70 classic super grade, and am now looking for a scope setup. I am going to mount it using leupold STD 2 piece bases and STD rings.
I haven't actually looked for a scope in a while, specifically a gloss one.
I'm unsure of how the high gloss look of the rifle will go with a matte scope but the only gloss scope I can find online in canada is a vx-2 3-9x40 for $399.
I was looking at some vortex viper scopes which I really like but are only in matte. I can get the 3-9x40 for $330 and the 3.5-10x50 for a little more. I would like a gloss scope but I think the viper is superior to the vx-2.
Is the gloss finish worth the extra $ ?
Can I see some of your guys's high gloss finish rifles with matte scopes?

IMHO, no issue going with matte scope on top of gloss blue finish rifle. Try to get matte bases & rings to go with the scope. Or at least matte rings, if you do.

That all said, gloss blue Leupold scopes do come up for sale on the EE quite often if you wanted to go gloss, gloss, gloss [rifle, bases, rings].

You going dancing or hunting?
Less glitter the better.
If I bought new, I'd pick the matte finish.
But...........if a glossy deal came along, I'd buy it too.

Leupold Vari X III 2.5-8 or 3.5-10 would be my selection in gloss, which I also happen to like. You didn't mention caliber..............
Never spooked a critter with a gloss scope, ever................

jharriet, my 75th anniversary M-70 is about as glossy blue as your ever going to get. I have the same mounts as your proposing with a Leupold VIII 3.5 x 10 x 40 in matte. Looks just fine. I use the 3.5 x 10 scopes as they have a longer tube on them which mount far back so they fit me better. I tried a 2.5 x 8 and because of the shorter tube even with extension rings I couldn't get it mounted rear ward enough to suit me. I kept having to crawl up the stock to get a decent view in the scope. What calibre is the new find in?

Longbranch, your a man after my own heart, nice line up there, what's the story on the second in from the R ? it has a no stock plug and a little different stock design. An old Chinese proverb, there are two types of rifle owners, " those that own M-70's and those that wish they did".

Thanks for kind words Mrgoat. The rifle second in from right started life as a 1938 .30-06 Super-Grade which got custom stocked and re-chambered/bored to .35 Whelen along the way. I got it from an estate sale three years ago. First weekend I carried it I took a 6X6 Elk, 4X4 Muley and a blackie that had been raiding our game-pole all in the same weekend! Scope is a VX1 2-7.
Left to right is:1954 .300H+H, Leupold 3.5-10 in Tally rings, 1946 '06 Govt with old Redfield, Next a 74th Anniversay with 2.5-8 Leupold. A new Alaskan .338WM w/ 2.5-8, the 1938 SG and a new Featherweight 7X47 w/ 3-9X40 Leupold.
Very nice .30-06 by the way NAA.
Cheers
Geoff

Thanks for the replays, those are some very nice rifles Geoff. The rifle looks perfect with a matte scope, I just couldn't picture how it would look in my head. I will deffinetly get matte bases and rings also. Now I just have to decide on a nice 3-9 scope. I'm leaning towards a 3.5-10x50 vortex viper I think.

So I figured out I cannot get matte bases for the rifle threw cabelas, were is there another place I can order some good bases and mounts for this rifle.

Jharriet, that is a very nice M-70 Super Grade but it is not of 1982 vintage. Two reasons, 1. it has CRF, 1982 M-70's were push feed. 2. according to my info Super Grades were discontinued in 1973 and did not reappear until 1990. It also has a later vintage checkering pattern that is lazer cut.
Try Epps for Leupold standard bases and med rings. Most places that carry Leupold bases have the windage adjustable ones. In my opinion they just have two more big screws that can come loose. Order the standard solid ones. No matter where you choose to get them they will probably order them from Korth in Calgary. Winchester also makes there own brand of rings and bases but I have never laid eyes on a set. They can be seen on Winchesters web site.

Longbranch, very interesting group you have there. Some of the old, new and in between. They looked well care for and loved. How do you like the 300 H&H that has been one of my wants?

The 83 year old man I purchased it from said he ordered it new in 1981.5. I will do a little research with the serial # and find out exactly.
