Winchester M70 Super Grade

Longbranch, very interesting group you have there. Some of the old, new and in between. They looked well care for and loved. How do you like the 300 H&H that has been one of my wants?

Everyone who wants a M70 wants a Super 30. Coincidentally almost no one sells their Super 30. There must be a reason for that.

The 83 year old man I purchased it from said he ordered it new in 1981.5. I will do a little research with the serial # and find out exactly.

Definitely a New Haven Classic. Same checkering patters an mine. Maybe the seller sold you the wrong rifle? That would be fortuitous as they're a very good rifle and still have the old trigger, which I'm particularly fond of.

I found a website I can get based and mounts from, does anyone know if a 50mm scope will have enough clearance with medium rings?
The serial # on the gun is G158### , I can't find much about the date of manufacture.

I doubt he sold the wrong rifle but frig knows, I'm deffinatly happy with it regardless. The bolt is like silk and the trigger is my favourite among my 9 rifles, its not too bad to look at either :)

I like the rail setup on your rifle, I may decide to do the same with mine instead of the 2 piece leupold dovetails I was planning on.

Ironically this is my second 1954 made .300. I foolishly sold an identical one a few years ago. Kicked myself ever since, but was fortunate to find this one a year ago. Will hang on to this one a little harder.

I was just noticing it did not look quite right for an 82 vintage, regardless of what year it is, it is a nice rifle, you sound happy with it and that is all that matters.

I looked into it a little bit and found that the serial # falls between 81/82. I probably should have checked before I bought it but it doesn't matter to me all that much, I just wanted a new deer/moose rifle.

I'm in the process of moving but when I'm reunited with my stuff I'll have a look to see if I still have that rail. Pretty sure it's in with my stuff somewhere as I'm as big a pack rat as you can get. I swapped it out for a custom +40 MOA rail from ATRS, who also built the rifle. With my setup I was zeroed at 200m at +75 MOA which wouldn't let me get as far as I wanted it to get so I had Rick build me a +40 rail which brought my scope to +35 MOA at 200m leaving me with tons of adjustment to push out.

I think mine is a 1954 as well. I think it will be doing a lot of my hunting once the move down South is complete.

That... is a beautiful gun...

When I order bases for this rifle do I get PRE or POST '64 bases.
It has the pre 64 crf action but was made after.
I'm assuming to get the PRE 64 bases?

Main difference is "pre-war" type 1 receiver which had a slot in rear bridge. Also .300&375 H+H which have rear bridge hogged out. Others should be same unless I'm mistaken.

Well I called talley and asked for assistance, they said their "post-64" bases and mounts fit every 4 hole model 70 receiver.
I was contemplating a few different base/ring setups but went with the same as my vanguard series 2, the aluminum talley 2 piece.

Well this ones a puzzle as your picture has the serial #G158072 and barrel stamped "Classic Super Grade" also shows a bolt with control round feed. Super Grades where no longer offered after 1973 and did not reappear until 1990. Control round feed did not exist on a M-70 in 1982.

If the serial number chart you show is correct, yes the rifle "G158072" dates from 1982. But the CRF and the Super Grade designation supposedly did not exist. Beats me, a real head scratcher. It is a very handsome rifle and appears in beautiful condition. Once you get it all set up with the configuration of scope and mounts you want I am sure you will be very pleased with it.

Funny...according to that list mine was built in 1987 though I know my dad didn't buy it until 1992 at the earliest as he bought it after we moved back to Yellowknife and he had waited his 2 years for residency. Maybe the "Classic" was built using old stock receivers with pre-64 bolts and extractors. Oddly mine doesn't have the black forend tip that the Classic Super Grade was marketed with.

Interestingly my Super is also a 1954. I wonder...maybe you sold yours to my Dad. Wouldn't that be a coincidence.

All the post '64s take the same bases except for the Express, and any other taking a full length magnum cartridge. The screw spacing is closer on the rear base, it might be .33" if my memory is working. What I do know for sure is you can count on the counter guy screwing that up, even if you tell him about it.

Just go on Leupold's website and get the proper serial number of the bases you choose for your gun. Its the easiest way to know for sure that you are getting the correct bases. Also, I believe I have a set of dual dove tail bases for a M70 that will fit your gun but they are gloss. Beautiful rifle OP.
