I have been looking at one of these babies at my local gun shop, trying to decide if I should gift myself one this Xmas. This is one gorgeous rifle if you like shiny things and excellent figured black walnut and for you CRF boys it's got that too. The workmanship is very good, the inletting is still machine done and could be better for a $2K rifle, but overall a fine firearm. I've also just checked my inventory in my gun room and it would seem that at this moment I don't have a bolt action 30-06, but I do have dies and about 400 brass for one........HHHMMMMMM
Now here's my question.............do I buy one now for $2000 or do I wait for a couple years and buy one from the EE for $2500 after it has some experience?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I know, I know, sarcasm is the lowest form of humor!!!......couldn't resist.

Go!
Right now,
the store is still open right now,at this time!

Jump in your truck and go,
your best Christmas prsent you can buy your self.

I'm not sure how old you are, maybe you want to wait another 25 years for the 100th anniversary? ;)

but... wait, you don't have a bolt action 30-06? really? In that case, maybe you should pull the trigger after all.

That's a fine line on the 100th Anniversay one, besides I can have both can't I? If I survive another 25 years and guns are still allowed and Browning is still offering the Winchester mod 70.........I think I better act now, too many IFs for the 100th.

No our local gun store is not open today, this is Whitehorse where store hours are set to convienience the staff, not the customer........believe me, not even open late for Xmas shoppers!!

If you see a gun you want you pretty much have to buy it or lose your opportunity forever. Great rifles aren't usually made long as quality costs more than people are generally willing to spend. Lack of demand and poof a great rifle is out of production. Then all the people lamenting the loss of a fine rifle drive up the used prices and hardly anyone takes them out hunting because they're getting scarce.

Meanwhile shooters go on collecting five cut rate rough-as-guts rifles instead of one great, very well-made example. We control quality by voting with our dollars.

In short, buy it. I can't see you getting better for cheaper down the road.

Very well said, and accurate. It's too bad so many people buy the cute rate "good enough for me" rifles, which reduces the over all quality of all firearms available.

I would rather spend 5x as much on a great rifle, than spend the same amount for 5 jack handles.... actually they arent even good enough for jack handles...

Wow,

That is the plain truth! I say buy it! Lovely rifle, and a solid calibre. I own a couple of the new manufacture winchesters, and a couple of the old. As far as I am concerned , the new model 70 is the best available mid range factory rifle out there! Enjoy.

I'm conflicted. On the one hand I have a soft spot for model 70s, even though sometimes they made it hard. I've also got a weakness for nice walnut.

On the other hand, I've had a couple of super-grades includeing a new production in 30-06. I've never noticed that the supergrades had any better fit than the sporters, and no reason to believe that the 75th anniversary is any different. The Supergrades do tend to have some nice looking timber. Its not much of a trick to find one for $1100.

It comes down to this: You've got an example in your hand. If you see 1000 bucks worth of value in that particular stock and an engraved floorplate over a supergrade then you should buy it. If not, then don't.

If I had 3 hands I'd say "You don't have 30-06?". Hell I don't even like them that much and have four. You're going to have to do something about that regardless.;)

Go for it young fella, then we will both have one. Epp's had three of the 75th aniversary 70's in stock last spring and I bought the one with the wood I liked. Got it bloodied on a deer a couple weeks back. They were listed at $1750 at the time. I have been pleased with the accuracy. It is better than my Kimber 8400 classic select.
At present Epp's also has a couple of the "Jack O'Connor" commemorative .270's in stock and I know you'll be itching to have one of them as well....!!!!

Good god man!! You don't have a CRF bolt in 3006 in one of your safes? And you can afford this and it has nice wood?

And it has less than 200 rounds down the pipe? (I could not resist either...) :p

Go out and buy that or vote NDP in the next election.

Maybe its time to think about replacing my well worn old '52 vintage Mod. 70. '06.
It has always been a dependable rifle, not benchrest accuracy but always putting that first round where it was supposed to go.
If the new one will do that, what more can a man ask for ?

Hey mrgoat, does Epps have any more at 1750 'cause our local yocal wants 2K for one, as far as the Jack model goes, you know what you can do with that one......."where the sun don't shine" comes to mind!!!!!

Doug

Glad to see your sense of humor is still in good order.!!! Funny how opinion's differ, my grandfather hung off every word O'Connor ever wrote. Personally I got tired of hearing the BS. Epp's only got three in his quota, this was last May. The first two went fast the last within a month, all at $1750.

Well Gentlemen, I have decided for the moment to NOT purchase the Mod 70 Anniv.....a sift through my gun room shows more than a dozen 30-30s,2.....30-40 Krags, 2....30-03s, 30-06 Win 95, 303, 3....308s a 300 WSM, a 300 WM, a 300 Wby and a 300 RUM and I was sure there was an old 700 bdl in '06 but can't put my fingers on it right now and an old Parker hale '06 barrelled action.
Besides that 2K pays for another ticket to RSA to do a baboon cull!!! 1000 baboons need to go and I'm just the guy to make that happen!!!!!

.;)

The FN super grades I have experience with had better metal fit and finish and sharper checkering than the FN featherweights I've known.

Good plan. I'd still cull part of the collection for the 75th. :D
