Winchester mod 88 1958

Nice looking. Has cut checkering not the later pressed checkering.

Much is often made of the pre and post Winchester 64s. The post 64 model 70s & 94s were definitely and are less desirable. However, the 88 & 100 had a number of issues during their production series which were finally resolved by 64/65. So in spite of the pressed checkering I will take a post 64 88 or 100 any day over a pre.

My Dad still hunts with one of these in 308. It's a post-64 with the basket weave pressing. I've seen them go locally for about 500-600$ish in NRA very good condition. Like others have said, a little more if there is an extra magazine involved in the deal.

Ole` gal looks like it has some s'perience.

That scope mount I'd toss if I was planning on using it for hunting.
Sure don't look all that sturdy.
Good find if you got it for a decent deal.

Just need some targets?

Looky, it appears to me that if you tossed the mounts you'd have to toss the scope as well, since the only elevation and windage adjustments are in the mount.

The 88 was a good looking rifle, that enabled lever action junkies to take advantage of modern cartridges, so naturally making a comparison with the older Savage 99 is inevitable. The 88 was more attractive, but the handling qualities between the two was, IMHO, a tie. The 88's I've used weren't exactly tack drivers, but like the Savage 99, when similarly chambered, they shot well enough for what they were, handy, fast shooting, big game rifles. Typically, the 88's triggers tended to be heavy and gritty, the 99's that I've used were better. I believe this is because the 88's "pinch proof" trigger was fixed to the lever, rather than to the receiver. That being said, an 88 old enough to have cut checkering is a desirable rifle to own.

You might be the only one who finds the post 64 rifles more attractive with the oak leaf impressed checkering
Value for the OP's rifle around $550 in my area. The same value with the old scope and mount.

No he's not.. I have a post '64 and last year facilitated a deal on a pre '64 for one of the camp members, M100's, and while the feel of the cut checkering is nicer when shooting, I much prefer the look of the oak leak & basket weave..

I still hunt with an old model 88 in 308 took a whitetail buck the last two seasons with mine
If anybody is looking to sell a 88 magazine in 308 please let me know my uncle is in need of one
