Just picked up this gun the other day and I am trying to determin the age of it. The serial # is 2267990 and according to some checking I have done it looks to be 1954-1956. I find it hard to believe because of the condition the gun is in( looks better than the 870 I bought new last year) can anybody let me know if the date is right. I am most likely going to sell it, but if its that old, I may just keep it a while.. Any Idea what it is worth?

made in 1957 - if the rifles were produced equally in number throughout the year - it would be made in late July / August. Search for Winchester Serial Numbers - a pdf scan will be downloaded

If it is truly mint condition I wouldn't think of selling it for $500. You will pay that for one in 60% to 70% condition. Pre 64 model 94 carbines in 95% plus condition are worth hanging onto as values are going to go up in the next ten years or so in my opinion.

Yes, make sure you store it properly so it doesn't get any rust on it and let time take it's course. I was given a Winchester 1886 Takedown that belonged to my wife's Great Grandfather. My wife's uncle didn't hunt so he just stuck it in his unheated garage for a few years. The side of the receiver developed some rust on it so he thought it would be a good idea to try removing the rust with coarse emery cloth and scratched it all up. Then he covered the whole thing in grease including all the internals and bore and wrapped it up in plastic and electrical tape and stored it in his basement. I was still really glad to inherit it and even hunt with it every year but it would have been worth a lot more if he had known how to take care of it.
