Hello All,
A short while ago I was given my dad's Winchester model100. While reading up about it, I came across a notice of recall regarding an issue with the breaking of the firing pin. This safety issue causes the rifle to fire before the bolt is in battery. This being of concern to me, I probed further. I found out Wichester has had a long standing offer to replace the potentially dangerous firing pin.
My concern is now this. Being that it takes, potentially, months for firearm parts to clear customs presently, is it wise of me to send off the firing pin I have , in order to get a replacement. That could leave my rifle disabled for months, if not forever. I know my concern is justified, because I have been waiting months for a spring to clear. On the one hand my rifle is disabled for who knows how long. On the other hand I risk damage to the rifle, and injury to myself. What to do?

If its a danger to you or anyone else who uses it, you don't have a safely working gun currently, so why would you be concerned with the wait time to get it fixed?

Unless you want to keep using it with the defective pin I see no reason to hesitate on getting this dealt with. Contacting whoever is the Winchester Warranty center in Canada might get you the parts faster than contacting winchester in the USA?

Call Keith at Longs Gunsmithing in Bewdley, he has done 1000's of these.

Thank you. That gives me a second option. However, I would rather not send the rifle out. I've tried calling, but it's busy. Do you have any experience with this? Is there a possibility that he would send me a firing pin if I sent him my firing pin. I already have the firing pin out, and it would only take me minutes to put the new one in.

I would not, of course, fire the rifle in it's current state.
If I only knew who in Canada would send me the part. Winchester USA has not been very helpful.

I did it via Winchester but over 5 years ago. I sent them the old one and the trunnion pin, and they sent me a replacement in probably a month later. Plus they sent a cheque for 25$ US to pay for gunsmithing.

The issue is the firing pin can work fine, but then break leaving the pin protruding and then it will fire when the bolt is allowed to go forward. If we could just buy them locally life would be good. Getting a smith to do it does give one benefit, as they mark the firearm to reflect the recall fix. Will help with future sales I would thnk.

Check with Western Gun Parts. They may have the bits you need. Then sit down at the kitchen table, pour yourself a cuppa coffee, and watch a couple youTube videos on the process. Here's one:

And another:

Trickiest part of this is finding videos that don't start with "WHAT'S UP, GUYS DON'T FORGET TO SMASH THAT LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE BUTTON..." and then turn into a chain of "take your screwdriver and..." instructions. That sh!t's annoying.

Good hunting,

Dan

Thanks for the information. I already disassembled and reassembled the rifle once. It's easy enough to disassemble, but tricky to put together. Thanks for the reference videos, I am sure I will be needing them for reassembly.

This whole firing pin recall is way over rated... just like Remington's trigger recall... it's mostly a lawyer thing...

If I owned a 100 I wouldn't be bothered at all to just use it... worked on many 100's over the years.. never came across a firing pin problem. I understand if the firing pin breaks and the tip jams forward the rifle will most likely fire on closing... a big surprise but it is pointed in a safe direction - no?

Just wondering what would happen if the round went off before the bolt is in battery. Is there a potential for the casing to rupture and have fragments go flying every which way.

He is a busy man, he used to supply the parts alone. Don't know if Winchester recall allows that anymore. Persistence and patients pays when dealing with Keith.

Yes, I have spoken with him about another matter. I believe it was about finding a new takedown screw for my Winchester 9422, which I never did find. Now that I think about it, is there anyone here that knows the whereabouts of a screw?

I'm pretty sure WGP won't sell you a firing pin.
Not unless you can proof yer a gunsmith.

I have already spoken with a Wichester representative There is no issue with them sending it to me, free of charge. In fact, they are sending $30 along with the part. The issue is that the part will take forever to clear customs given the current political climate.
