WINCHESTER MODEL 100 in .284 Win.

COYOTE489
If you want to see just how good the gun has been kept over the years and if you feeling adventurous...They are tricky to take apart and even trickier to get back together..... Best ship it off to "Guntech". First thing he will do is take off that Bushnell Banner Scope and rings and toss them in the garbage.

Dam you mrgoat, you done taken all the fun out of this thread.:(
Personally the gun isn't my cups, but the .284 makes it interesting and being an older gun too makes it more interesting.
Your advice about tearing it down for cleaning and obvious experience are also top notch advice too, nothing like becoming one with your new firearm.Hope the Op enjoys his new found gun and heads some advice .
Yes,s save on shipping and dump those see through rings and get a better piece of glass son it.
I wonder if there are any good U Toobe clips on this gun showing the areas you spoke of?
Best Regards and Tighter Groups,
Rob

Funs not over yet young fella, as he is going punch out that one pin on the action bars and there will be springs and parts all over the room.;) Guntech will get work out of this yet!!

Yup, this sure doesn't get me excited to clean the old girl..... Now I am afraid...... Maybe I'll take a video of me miserably failing and post it

No he won't... I no longer do 'general repairs' as I am semi retired and quite happy doing accuracy work on bolt actions... guns in a bag have no interest for me. I do remember the headaches of re bluing 88's and 100's...

Its not as difficult to take apart as some are trying to lead you to believe! :)

Lol @ "guns in a bag"!! I have one of those, and have dealt with quite a few. The one I currently have needs to have a u shaped spring made for it, then it can go back together. You up for making me a small bent piece of spring steel? Lol

I have a .243 and 308 m100's both bought the same time. There not that bad to take apart or put back together to me and I'm no smith. Trying to find a .284 so I have a complete set minus the carbine offering.

My brother had one in 308 win.
Got rid of it because of poor accuracy.
It was a pretty rifle with real nice wood.
Tried several factory brands of ammo and the thing shot 4"+ 3 shot patterns at 100 yards.
The barrel rifling looked 'shot out' to me.

Seriously, if your at all mechanically inclined stripping a M-100 down completely and reassembling is do able, it is a must you pay attention to what your doing. The action bars for the want of a better term are under spring tension. One pin holds the whole works together. If you remove the pin and your not holding on to the bars they are under load from the spring and will fly several feet across the room. I always put wooden blocks in my vise and securely hold the gun by the barrel this gives you both hands to work with.
I have been brought M-100's in gun cases all a part by fellas who got them a part and couldn't get them back together. I have also had them brought in because they couldn't get them apart. Once you have done one a couple times and know what to look for and develop a method it is not a big deal.
Many guys who say they take there M-100 all apart don't. They disassemble only far enough to get the bolt assembly out of the receiver to get a cleaning rod down the barrel. Take one ALL apart right down to disassembling all the bolt so you can clean it all thoroughly and it can be tricky getting it back together correctly. Because it is possible to put it back together incorrectly. So you just have to pay attention when disassembling as to how things went.

Give it ago and if you have any issues there are enough of us on here that know how to do this that we can help you get her all cleaned up and back together.

I think your speaking of the spring clip that snaps over the threaded gas cap. If so I may have one of those, I will check the parts bin and see if I still have it.

May look at selling the rifle. PM me if interested. Don't wanna put it in exchange quite yet as I am really not a whole lot sure what to do with it.

The firing pin recall is no big deal... highly overrated by lawyers...

If you do strip it completely you will require some slave pins to assemble it.

It is quite possible there are some parts in the trigger group you can leave out and it will function just perfectly... I forget which parts those are...

Thanks for all the great tips!!! I still haven't had the time to take it apart and probably won't until this weekend. I'd like to clean it up nice then go put some rounds down range, then clean it again I suppose. Never shot a .284 so I'm pretty excited to see how it performs. Thanks again.

Sorry Pete, I was just referring to the "guns in a bag" comment from Dennis. It's not even a rifle, it's an old double 16ga that needs the spring for the opening lever to return to lock position.

If you don't know what you're doing with something of value.......pay someone who does.If you break a part good luck finding a replacement...it's your gun.....JMO...Harold
